In a recent interview with Danny Elfman at the Grammy Museum’s Clive Davis Theater in downtown Los Angeles, the composer talked about some of his upcoming projects. He revealed that he will be reuniting with director Sam Raimi for the first time since 2004’s Spider-Man 2. Raimi’s next directorial effort is Walt Disney Pictures’ fantasy tentpole Oz: The Great and Powerful. The film is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz that finds the titular character arriving in the Land of Oz and being treated like a wizard by the colorful locals. The movie’s cast includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. Rhino Records will be releasing the soundtrack album for the Tom Hanks-directed comedy drama Larry Crowne. The album includes one track from the score by James Newton Howard, as well as several songs from the movie. Artists featured on the album include Tom Petty, Electric Light Orchestra, Smokey Robinson, Tyler Hilton, Billy Squier, Sky Ferreira, Jarrod Gorbel and Gigi. Thomas Newman is currently scoring the comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The film starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel and Tom Wilkinson follows a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. The movie is directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) who has worked with Newman on his last movie The Debt, which will be released in the US later this summer. The Best Exotic Marigold is based on the book These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach and adapted for the screen by Ol Parker (Imagine Me & You). Watertower Music will be releasing the official soundtrack album for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The album includes the original score by Alexandre Desplat and will be released on July 12, 2011. The music was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London. Jon Brion to Score ‘ParaNorman’

Focus Features has announced that Jon Brion has signed on to score the upcoming 3D stop-motion animated comedy thriller ParaNorman. The movie centers Norman, a misunderstood 13-year-old boy who is the only person in a small town that has the abilities to prevent an attack from zombies. The film’s voice cast includes Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck, Tempestt Bledsoe, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, Bernard Hill, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Elaine Stritch, Tucker Albrizzi, Alex Borstein and Jodelle Ferland. The film is directed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away, The Tale of Desperaux) and Chris Butler (storyboard supervisor on Coraline) who also wrote the screenplay. ‘Jig’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande has announced a soundtrack release for the documentary Jig. The film’s music is by Patrick Doyle who also has two blockbuster scores coming out this summer (Thor, Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Apart from the score, the soundtrack also features the song Now Is Your Time with music written by the composer and performed by his daughter Abigail Doyle. The album will be released on July 12, 2011 and is available for pre-order on Amazon. Jig is directed and produced by Sue Bourne and tells the story of the 40th Irish Dancing World Championships. Brian Tyler Scoring ‘Brake’

Brian Tyler has recently scored the upcoming indie production Brake. The film is directed by Gabe Torres who previously collaborated with Tyler on the composer’s first feature film Bartender. Nathan West and James Walker are producing and James Mathers (The U.S. vs. John Lennon) is the film’s cinematographer. Not much is known yet about the movie, but production on the film has recently been finished and the project is screening for buyers this month. Yesterday afternoon, Michael Giacchino and J.J. Abrams took part in a discussion of the movie industry and their work together at UCLA’s Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. I Heart Woo has uploaded a video of almost 10 minutes from the event. During the conversation, Giacchino and Abrams talk about the director/composer relationship, the composer’s work on their first collaboration on Alias, as well as their thoughts on the ending of Lost.
