Universal Music Group will be releasing the soundtrack album for the musical comedy Pitch Perfect. The album features the songs performed by the movie’s competing a capella groups The Barden Bellas and The Treblemakers. Also included is a suite from the film’s original score composed and produced by Christophe Beck and Mark Kilian. Daniel Pemberton Scoring ‘Blood’

Daniel Pemberton has recently recorded his score for the British psychological thriller Blood at Abbey Road Studios in London. The project reunites the composer with director Nick Murphy who previously directed the horror thriller The Awakening starring Rebecca Hall, which is currently playing in limited release with the composer’s soundtrack out on Screamworks Records. Blood stars Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham as two cop brothers who collapse under the weight of their father’s shadow and must investigate a crime they themselves have committed. Hal David (1921-2012)

Lyricist Hal David has passed away today at age 91 in Los Angeles. The songwriter was best known for his collaborations with Burt Bacharach and has written the lyrics for numerous hit songs, including several original songs for film. He received an Academy Award for co-writing the classic song Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head from 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids with Bacharach and also was honored with three more Oscar nominations in the Best Original Song category for The Look of Love from Casino Royale, Alfie from the 1966 film of the same name and the title song from 1965’s What’s New Pussycat. James Levine is the composer of the new NBC comedy The New Normal. The show is created by Ryan Murphy & Ali Adler and stars Justin Bartha, Andrew Rannells, Georgia King, Bebe Wood, NeNe Leakes and Ellen Barkin. The series follows a gay Los Angeles couple and a cash-strapped waitress who becomes a surrogate to help them have a child. Murphy has directed the pilot episode and is also executive producing the Twentieth Century Fox Television production with Adler and Dante Di Loreto (Glee, Temple Grandin). Levine has been working with Murphy on all of his shows since the premiere of the FX drama Nip/Tuck in 2003, including the hit shows Glee and American Horror Story, both of which will be back with new seasons this fall. Three new movies are opening wide this week:

Already in theaters since Wednesday is the gangster movie Lawless directed by John Hillcoat, based on the novel The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant and starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Guy Pearce, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowski. The film’s music is composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis who formed the band The Bootleggers (which also includes Martyn Casey, George Vjestic and David Sardy) for the project. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring both songs and score from the movie. Check out our previous article for the full album details and audio clips. Opening wide today is the horror thriller The Possession directed by Ole Bornedal, produced by Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Grant Show and Madison Davenport. Anton Sanko (Rabbit Hole, Big Love) has composed the film’s score. Lionsgate Records has released a soundtrack featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Chad Fischer is scoring the upcoming drama Chasing Mavericks. The film stars Jonny Weston as Jay Moriarty, a world champion surfer from Northern California who made his reputation surfing Mavericks north of Half Moon Bay before dying in a diving accident at age 22. Gerard Butler stars as Frosty Hesson, the local legend who took Jayunder his wing in order to train him. Taylor Handley, Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer are co-starring. The true life story is directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, 8 Mile) and Michael Apted (The World is Not Enough, Nell) who took over the final weeks of production. Academy to Celebrate 50 Years of James Bond Music

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced an event to pay homage to the memorable title songs and indelible scores of the James Bond films. The Music of Bond: The First 50 Years hosted by music historian and writer Jon Burlingame will feature many of the people who made the music, including lyricist Don Black (title songs for Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man with the Golden Gun and The World Is Not Enough) and guitarist Vic Flick who played the guitar riff for the original version of the James Bond Theme. New Oscar Rule Guarantees Five Song Nominations

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has approved a new rule for the 85th Academy Awards in the Best Original Song category, in which there will now be five guaranteed nominees. According to the Academy, “all voting members of the music branch will receive a reminder list of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips. ‘Dredd’ Soundtrack Details

The details of the soundtrack release for the new comic book movie adaptation of Dredd have been revealed. The album features the film’s original score composed by Paul Leonard-Morgan (Limitless). The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 3, 2012 and physically on September 10 (overseas only) by Metropolis Movie Music. Mychael Danna has composed the score for the upcoming epic mini-series World Without End. The series based on Ken Follett’s best-selling novel is directed by Michael Caton-Jones and stars Cynthia Nixon, Ben Chaplin, Peter Firth, Charlotte Riley, Rupert Evans, Nora von Waldstaetten, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Tom Weston-Jones, Megan Follows and Sarah Gadon. The eight-hour thriller is the follow up to the 2010 mini-series The Pillars of the Earth (scored by Trevor Morris) and is set over 150 years after the Pillars events during the start of the Hundred Years’ War and the outbreak of the Black Death.
