Craig Armstrong has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming drama Mrs. Lowry and Son. The film is directed by Adrian Noble (The Importance of Being Earnest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and stars Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave. The movie examines the relationship between British painter L.S. Lowry, who was famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century and his mother, Elizabeth. Martyn Hesford (Fantabulosa!) wrote the screenplay based on his own stage play of the same title.

James Edward Barker to Score William McGregor’s ‘Gwen’
James Edward Barker has signed on to score the upcoming gothic mystery thriller Gwen. The film is written and directed by William McGregor and stars Maxine Peake, Eleanor Worthington-Cox, Jodie Innes, Richard Harrington, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and Mark Lewis Jones. The movie centers on a young girl who desperately tries to hold her family together in the face of a hostile local community, a rapacious slate mine nearing their land and a growing darkness that has begun to haunt her home life.
Ryuichi Sakamoto to Compose Theme for Yoshihiro Hanno’s ‘Paradise Next’
Variety is reporting that Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Revenant, The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky, Snake Eyes) will be composing the theme for the upcoming drama Paradise Next. The film is directed by Japanese composer Yoshihiro Hanno (Mountains May Depart, Dragonfly Eyes) who previously helmed the 2015 feature A Woman Wavering in the Rain) and is set to star Satoshi Tsumbuki and Etsushi Toyokawa. The movie is being described as “a road movie involving two hit men on a journey of atonement.”
Christopher Lennertz to Score Tim Story’s ‘Shaft’ Sequel
Christopher Lennertz is reteaming with director Tim Story on the upcoming Shaft sequel. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson & Jessie T. Usher as father and son, as well as Richard Roundtree, Alexandra Shipp, Regina Hall, Avan Jogia and Method Man. The movie centers on the young and old Shafts as they are are forced to team up. Jackson is reprising his role from John Singleton’s 2000 Shaft movie, which was scored by David Arnold and featured Isaac Hayes’ classic theme from the 1971 original film.
Dario Marianelli to Score ‘Transformers’ Spinoff ‘Bumblebee’
Dario Marianelli has been tapped to score the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee. The film is directed by Travis Knight and stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Rachel Crow, Pamela Adlon, Stephen Schneider, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn and Grace Dzienny. The movie is set in 1987 and follows a teenage girl trying to find her place in the world as she discovers Bumblebee refuged in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town.
Henry Jackman Scoring Edward Zwick’s ‘Trial by Fire’
Henry Jackman has recently recorded his score for the upcoming drama Trial by Fire. The film is directed by Edward Zwick (Legends of the Fall, Glory, The Last Samurai, Blood Diamond) and stars Jack O’Connell, Laura Dern, Emily Meade, Chris Coy, Jeff Perry, David Wilson Barnes and Carlos Gomez. The movie is based on David Grann’s 2009 article in The New Yorker and tells the true story of Cameron Todd Willingham, a poor, uneducated devotee of heavy metal who is convicted of arson and triple homicide when a fire rips through his home and his children are trapped inside.
Mychael Danna Scoring Mimi Leder’s ‘On the Basis of Sex’
Mychael Danna is currently scoring the upcoming biographical drama On the Basis of Sex. The film is directed by Mimi Leder (Deep Impact, The Peacemaker) and stars Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, alongside Armie Hammer, Jack Reynor, Stephen Root, Justin Theroux, Kathy Bates, Sam Waterston and Cailee Spaeny. The movie follows Ruth Bader & Marty Ginsburg as they team up to bring the first landmark gender discrimination case before the Supreme Court. Ginsburg’s nephew, Daniel Stiepleman wrote the screenplay. Robert Cort (Mr. Holland’s Opus, Save the Last Dance, Cocktail) is producing the Participant Media production.

Tamar-kali has been hired to score the upcoming family drama Between Earth and Sky. The film is written and directed by Veena Sud (The Killing, Seven Seconds) and stars Mireille Enos, Peter Sarsgaard and Joey King. No plot details have been announced yet. Jason Blum (Get Out, Paranormal Activity, The Purge), Alix Madigan (Winter’s Bone, Laggies) and Christopher Tricarico (The Man in the High Castle, Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams) are producing the Blumhouse production.
Jon Brion Scoring Gilles Lellouche’s ‘Sink or Swim’ (‘Le grand bain’)
Jon Brion has recently composed the music for the upcoming French comedy Sink or Swim (Le grand Bain). The film is directed by actor Gilles Lellouche (The Secret Adventures of Gustave Klopp) and stars Mathieu Amalric, Guillaume Canet, Benoît Poelvoorde and Virginie Efira. The movie follows a group of 40-something guys, all on the verge of a mid-life crisis, who decide to form their local pool’s first ever synchronized swimming team – for men. Lellouche also co-wrote the screenplay with Ahmed Hamidi and Julien Lambroschini.
Pitbull & Jorge Gomez Scoring Kevin Connolly’s ‘Gotti’
Pitbull (aka Armando Christian Perez) and Jorge Gomez have composed the original score for the biographical drama Gotti. The film is directed by Kevin Connolly and stars John Travolta in the title role, alongside Kelly Preston, Ella Bleu Travolta, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Stacy Keach, Chris Mulkey, Lydia Hull and Spencer Lofranco. The movie tells the story of John Gotti, the flamboyant head of the Gambino crime family who spent the last decade of his life in prison before dying of throat cancer in 2002 Lem Dobbs (Dark City, The Score, The Company You Keep) and Leo Rossi have written the screenplay.
