The 10th Guild of Music Supervisors Awards were handed out on Thursday night at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. Mary Ramos received the top honor in the Best Music Supervision in Motion Picture – Motion Picture Over 25M for her work on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Kier Lehman received the award in the Motion Picture Under 25M category for his music supervision on Melina Matsouka’s Queen & Slim. Meghan Currier and Randall Poster were honored in the Motion Picture Under 10M category for their music supervision on Trey Edward Shults’ Waves and Terri D’Ambrosio took home the prize in the Motion Picture Under 5M category for her work on Joe Talbot’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Tracy McKnight was the winner in the Best Music Supervision – Documentary category for her music supervision on Frederic Tcheng’s Halston.
In the Best Song Written and/or Recorded for a Film category, music supervisor Evyen Klean, singer/songwriter Regina Spektor and director Jay Roach accepted the award for the original song One Little Soldier from Roach’s Bombshell. Earlier in the evening, Spektor performed the song for the first live in front of an audience. Among the other winners were Adam Leber and Jen Malone who won their first Guild of Music Supervisors Award for their work on the first season of HBO’s Euphoria in the TV Drama category, while Robin Urdang took home the prize in the TV Comedy or Musical category for her music supervision on the second season of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel after previously receiving the award last year for her work on Season 1. Thomas Golubić accepted the award for the winner in the Best Song Written and/or Recorded for Television category for the Something Stupid cover from AMC’s Better Call Saul by Lola Marsh who performed the song at the event. There was a tie in the in the Television Movie category, with Howard Paar winning his fourth Guild of Music Supervisors Award for HBO’s Native Son and Joe Rudge & Chris Swanson receiving the GMS Award for the Netflix’s Mötley Crüe biopic The Dirt. In the Docuseries category, Rudy Chung & Jonathan Christiansen were the winners for Showtime’s Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men. Other winners include Jill Meyers for NBC’s Songland in the Reality Television category, Anny Colvin (Jax) for the teaser trailer for Todd Phillips’ Joker, Cybele Pettus & Raphaella Lima for FIFA 20 in the Video Game category, as well as David Taylor, Scott McDaniel & Jonathan Wellbelove who won two awards for Apple iPhone “Color Flood” in the Advertising (Synch) category and Apple Watch “Hokey Pokey” in the Advertising (Original Music) category.
For the fifth time, the organization gave out the Guild of Music Supervisors Legacy Award, which went to Bob Hunka, who served as Senior VP of Music at Sony Pictures Television and was the music supervisor of movies such as Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Robot Jox. Country singer Emmylou Harris gave a surprise guest performance before she presented the Legacy Award to her longtime friend, who – throughout his career – managed a Symphony Orchestra (Edmonton), a mobile recording studio (Enactron), an independent record production company (Happy Sack Productions), and Dolly Parton’s music publishing company (Velvet Apple Music).
For the third time, the Guild of Music Supervisors Icon Award was given out. Academy Award and Grammy Award winner Burt Bacharach who wrote numerous songs for film and also scored several movies, including What’s New Pussycat, 1967’s Casino Royale, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and 1981’s Arthur received the Icon Award. Director Jay Roach who worked with Bacharach on the Austin Powers sequels, introduced the composer before he came to stage to accept his award and perform the title song from 1966’s Alfie, for which he received his second Academy Award nomination. Among the other presenters throughout the evening were singer/songwriter Michael Bolton, actors Alex Winter (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure), Rhea Seehorn & Patrick Fabian (Better Call Saul), Peter Gallagher (The O.C.), Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked), Daniel Ezra (All American, Prey), Dash Mihok (Ray Donovan), musician/comedian Reggie Watts, former NFL player Spencer Paysinger and composer Pinar Toprak (Captain Marvel).
