Opening in select theaters today before coming out on VOD on June 23 is the horror thriller The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster written and directed by Bomani J. Story and starring Laya DeLeon Hayes, Denzel Whitaker, Reilly Brooke Stith, Chad L. Coleman and Keith Holliday. The film’s original music is composed by Nima Fakhrara (Becky, Lou, The Signal, The Wrath of Becky, Sick, Detroit: Become Human). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a brilliant teenager who embarks on a journey to bring his brother back to life after he is murdered, premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and is being released by RLJE Films.
Opening in New York today before expanding to more U.S. markets over the next couple of weeks is the French/Italian period drama Scarlet (L’envol) co-written and directed by Pietro Marcello and starring Juliette Jouan, Louis Garrel, Noémie Lvovsky, Raphaël Thiery and Ernst Umhauer. Gabriel Yared (The Talented Mr. Ripley, The English Patient, Judy, 1408, Cold Mountain, Betty Blue) has composed the film’s original music. MovieScore Media & Quarter Records have released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this year when the movie opened overseas. The movie, which revolves around a wounded veteran who is struggling to find meaning in life after war, when he encounters an experienced fly-fisherman and a librarian, each bearing their own scars, is distributed by Blue Fox Entertainment.
Also opening in select U.S. theaters is the war drama Persian Lessons directed by Vadim Perelman and starring Nahuel Perez Biscayart, Lars Eidinger and Jonas Nay. The film’s original music is composed by Evgueni Galperine & Sacha Galperine (The Undoing, Loveless, The Wizard of Lies, The Family, Radioactive). Hype Films has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score back in 2021 when the movie opened overseas.
