Over the past week, Joby Talbot (Sing, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Closed Circuit, Penelope, Son of Rambow) has been recording his underscore for the upcoming musical fantasy adventure Wonka. The film is directed by Paul King (Paddington) and stars Timothée Chalamet, Rowan Atkinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby and Natasha Rothwell. As previously reported, Neil Hannon (who previously worked with Talbot who was a member of the singer/songwriter’s band The Divine Comedy in the 1990s and early 2000s) has written the original songs for the movie, which takes place before the events of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and follows the title character on one his earliest adventures. King and Farnaby wrote the screenplay based on the characters created by Roald Dahl. David Heyman (Harry Potter series, Gravity), Luke Kelly (Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, The Witches) and Alexandra Derbyshire are producing the project. Talbot’s score is being recorded at Abbey Road and AIR Studios in London. Wonka is set to be released in theaters nationwide on December 15, 2023 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
