Opening in theaters nationwide this week is Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness directed by Sam Raimi and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stühlbarg, Benedict Wong and Rachel McAdams. The film’s original music composed by Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, Batman, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland). Hollywood Records & Marvel Music have released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Opening in select U.S. theaters today is the French drama Happening (L’événement) co-written (based on Annie Ernaux’s novel) and directed by Audrey Diwan and starring Anamaria Vartolomei, Marcia Romano, Luàna Bajrami, Marcia Romano, Louise Orry Diquero and Louise Chevillotte. Evgueni Galperine & Sacha Galperine (The Undoing, Scenes from a Marriage, Radioactive, Loveless, The Family, Wizard of Lies) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie, which is based on Ernaux’s experience with abortion when it was still illegal in France, premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival and is being distributed in the U.S. by IFC Films.
Also opening in select theaters before coming on out on VOD on Tuesday, May 10, is the supernatural horror thriller Shepherd written and directed by Russell Owen and starring Tom Hughes, Kate Dickie, Gaia Weiss and Greta Scacchi. The film’s original music is composed by Callum Donaldson (Forever Tomorrow). Decal Audio has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this year. Also opening in limited release is the documentary Have You Heard About Greg? directed by Steven Ecclesine about Alzheimer’s disease. Timothy Williams (Brightburn, Walking with the Enemy, Finding You, Wild Horses), Chad Cannon (American Factory, Paper Lanterns) and Jesse Carmichael have composed the film’s original music. MovieScore Media/Reality Bytes have released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score and Chris Mann’s song Remember Me today. Opening in select U.S. theaters before premiering on Wednesday, May 11 on Netflix is the spy drama Operation Mincemeat directed by John Madden and starring Colin Firth, Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Penelope Wilton, Jason Isaacs, Johnny Flynn, Hattie Morahan, Mark Gatiss, Mark Bonnar and Alex Jennings. The film’s original music is composed by Thomas Newman (American Beauty, The Shawshank Redemption, 1917, Skyfall, Finding Nemo,Wall-E). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score in April. Opening in Los Angeles before a release in New York theaters last week is the French thriller Black Box (Boîte noire) directed by Yann Gozlan and starring Pierre Niney, Lou De Laâge and André Dussollier. Philippe Rombi (Swimming Pool, Angel, In the House, Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion) has composed the film’s original music. Music Box Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last September when the movie opened in France. Opening in a single theater while also premiering on Netflix today is the teen drama Along for the Ride written and directed by Sofia Alvarez and starring Emma Pasarow, Belmont Cameli, Andie MacDowell, Kate Bosworth, Dermot Mulroney, Laura Kariuki, Genevieve Hannelius, Marcus Scribner, Samia Finnerty, Ricardo Hurtado and Paul Karmiryan. The film’s original music is composed by the indie-pop duo Beach House (Victoria Legrand & Alex Scally) who have made their scoring debut on the drama.
