Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the spy thriller Red Sparrow directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeremy Irons. The film’s original music is composed by James Newton Howard (The Hunger GamesThe Sixth SenseThe FugitiveSignsKing KongFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). Also opening wide is the thriller Death Wish directed by Eli Roth and starring Bruce Willis, Vincent D’Onofrio, Elisabeth Shue, Camila Morrone, Dean Norris and Kimberly Elise. Ludwig Goransson (Black PantherCreedCommunityFruitvale StationEverything, Everything) has composed the film’s original music. Opening in limited release is the drama The Vanishing of Sidney Hall directed by Shawn Christensen and starring Logan Lerman, Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Michelle Monaghan, Blake Jenner, Tim Blake Nelson and Margaret Qualley. The film’s original music is composed by Darren Morze (Enter Nowhere). The movie follows a man who finds accidental success and unexpected love at an early age, then disappears without a trace. The drama premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in theaters by A24 following its debut on DirecTV in January.

Also opening in limited release is the Israeli drama Foxtrot written and directed by Samuel Maoz and starring Lior Ashkenazi, Sarah Adler and Yonatan Shiray. Ophir Leibovitch & Amit Poznansky (Footnote, Prisoners of War) have composed the film’s original music. The drama, which revolves around a reported death of an upper-class Israeli couple’s soldier son that sparks a series of tragicomically absurd events, premiered at various film festivals last year (including Venice and Toronto) and is being released by Sony Pictures Classics. Also opening in select cities is the Australian dance movie Dance Academy: The Comeback (aka Dance Academy: The Movie) directed by Jeffrey Walker and starring Xenia Goodwin, Miranda Otto, Dena Kaplan, Alicia Banit, Thomas Lacey, Jordan Rodrigues, Keiynan Lonsdale and Tara Morice. The film’s original score is composed by David Hirschfelder (Elizabeth, Shine, Australia, Strictly Ballroom). The drama based on the TV series of the same title opened in Australian theaters last spring and is being released in the U.S. by Cinedigm.

Opening in New York before expanding to more markets within the next couple of weeks is the drama Submission directed by Robert Levine and starring Stanley Tucci, Addison Timlin, Kyra Sedgwick, Janeane Garofalo, Ritchie Coster, Colby Minifie, Alison Bartlett and David Pittu. Jeff Russo (Fargo, Legion, The Night Of, Star Trek: Discovery) has composed the film’s original score. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which revolves around a cynical college professor who takes a keen interest in a talented young writing student, premiered at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival and is being released by Good Deed Entertainment.

Jeff Russo has also composed the music for another limited release this week, the documentary Hondros directed by Greg Campbell. The movie follows the life and career of famous war photographer Chris Hondros by exploring the stories behind this award-winning photojournalist’s best-known photos. No soundtrack album has been announced. The documentary premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by Freestyle Digital Media.
