Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the superhero movie Wonder Woman directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. The film’s original music is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Hacksaw Ridge, The Legend of Tarzan, The Crown). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as Sia’s original song To Be Human. Also opening wide is the animated feature Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie directed by David Soren and featuring the voices of Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele and Kristen Schaal. Theodore Shapiro (Ghostbusters, The Devil Wears Prada, Tropic Thunder) has composed the film’s original score and was also involved as co-writer and arranger/producer for several of the songs. Virgin Records has released a soundtrack album featuring three tracks from the composer’s score, as well as songs by Andy Grammar, Adam Lambert, Nathan Willett & more. Opening in limited release is the comedy Dean written and directed by Demetri Martin who also stars in the film alongside Kevin Kline, Gillian Jacobs, Mary Steenburgen, Reid Scott, Rory Scovel, Christine Woods, Ginger Gonzaga, Peter Scolari and Briga Heelan. The film’s original score is composed by Mark Noseworthy and Orr Rebhun (American Housewife, The Crazy Ones). No word on a soundtrack release. Dean follows an NY illustrator who falls hard for an LA woman while trying to prevent his father from selling the family home in the wake of his mother’s death. The comedy premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by CBS Films.
Also opening in limited release is the biographical drama Churchill directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and starring Brian Cox, Miranda Richardson, John Slattery, Ella Purnell, James Purefoy and Julian Wadham. Lorne Balfe (The LEGO Batman Movie, Genius, Terminator Genisys, Ghost in the Shell, Home) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in select theaters is the period dramatic thriller The Exception directed by David Leveaux and starring Lily James, Jai Courtney, Janet McTeer and Christopher Plummer. The film’s original music is composed by Ilan Eshkeri (The Young Victoria, Still Alice, Layer Cake, Stardust). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, both digitally and as a limited edition CD version. Another limited release this weekend is the indie comedy drama Band Aid written and directed by Zoe Lister-Jones who also stars in the film alongside Adam Pally, Fred Armisen, Susie Essman, Hannah Simone, Brooklyn Decker, Colin Hanks and Ravi Patel. The indie pop band Lucius has composed the film’s original score. The movie’s original songs are written by Lister-Jones and Kyle Forester. Also opening in select U.S. cities is the Israeli thriller Past Life written and directed by Avi Nesher and starring Nelly Tagar, Joy Rieger, Doron Tavory, Evgenia Dodina, Tom Avni, Rafael Stachowiak, Muli Shulman, Katarzyna Gniewkowska, Gilat Ankori and Orna Rotenberg. The film’s original music is composed by Cyrille Aufort (A Royal Affair, Splice, Ombline). MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as additional music from the movie by Avner Dorman and Ella Milch-Sheriff. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama Vincent N Roxxy directed by Gary Michael Schultz and starring Emile Hirsch, Zoë Kravitz, Emory Cohen, Zoey Deutch, Beau Knapp, Jason Mitchell and Scott Mescudi. Ahmir Thompson aka Questlove has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been released. The movie follows a small town loner and a rebellious punk rocker who unexpectedly fall in love as they are forced on the run and soon discover violence follows them everywhere. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD by Vertical Entertainment.
