Four new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Moana directed by Ron Clements & John Musker and featuring the voices of Auli’i Cravelho and Dwayne Johnson. The film’s original score is composed by Mark Mancina (Twister, Speed, Tarzan, Brother Bear, Planes). The composer also co-wrote the movie’s original songs with Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and Opetaia Foa’i. Also opening wide is the romantic thriller Allied directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Brad Pitt, Marion Cotillard, Jared Harris, Lizzy Caplan, Simon McBurney, Daniel Betts, Camille Cottin, August Diehl and Matthew Goode. Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, The Avengers, Cast Away) has composed the film’s original music. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as jazz classics by Benny Goodman, Louis Primas & more. Another wide release this week is the comedy sequel Bad Santa 2 directed by Mark Waters and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Kathy Bates, Christina Hendricks, Tony Cox, Brett Kelly, Ryan Hansen, Jenny Zigrino and Jeff Skowron. The film’s original score is composed by Lyle Workman (Superbad, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Love). Red River Entertainment has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by artists including Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, CeeLo Green, Joy Williams & more. Also opening wide is the period drama Rules Don’t Apply directed by Warren Beatty who also stars in the film alongside Lily Collins, Alden Ehrenreich, Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, Martin Sheen, Taissa Farmiga, Ed Harris, Megan Hilty and Oliver Platt. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie doesn’t feature an original score, but makes a prominent use of Ennio Morricone’s score to Pane e Libertá. Lorraine Feather & Eddie Arkin have contributed the original song The Rules Don’t Apply, which is performed in the film by Collins. Click here to check out a recent trailer featuring the song.
Opening in limited release this week is the drama Lion directed by Garth Davis and starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, David Wenham, Divian Ladwa, Priyanka Bose and Pallavi Sharda. Dustin O’Halloran (Transparent, Like Crazy,) and Hauschka (aka Volker Bertelmann) (In Dubious Battle) have composed the film’s original score and Sia has contributed the original song Never Give Up. Also opening in select theaters today is the dramatic thriller Miss Sloane directed by John Madden and starring Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Stulbarg, Alison Pill, Jake Lacy, Sam Waterston and John Lithgow. The film’s original music is composed by Max Richter (The Leftovers, Waltz with Bashir, Disconnect, Testament of Youth). Europacorp has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in select U.S. cities this week is the documentary Seasons (Les saisons) directed by Jacques Perrin & Jacques Cluzaud. Bruno Coulais (Coraline, The Chorus, Song of the Sea, The Crimson Rivers) who previously scored the directors’ Winged Migration and Oceans has composed the film’s original music.
