Three new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the fantasy adventure Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children directed by Tim Burton and starring Eva Green, Asa Butterfield and Samuel L. Jackson. The film’s original music is composed by Mike Higham & Matthew Margeson (Eddie the Eagle, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kick-Ass 2). A soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score will be released digitally within the next few weeks and physically on October 11 on La-La Land Records’ website and October 14 in other stores. Also opening wide is the action drama Deepwater Horizon directed by Peter Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien and Kate Hudson. Steve Jablonsky (Transformers, Ender’s Game, Lone Survivor, The Island) has composed the film’s original music. Warner Bros. Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as an original song by Gary Clark Jr. Click here for the full album details. Also opening wide is the comedy Masterminds directed by Jared Hess and starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Kate McKinnon, Ken Marino, Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Leslie Jones. The film’s original music is composed by Geoff Zanelli (Disturbia, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, The Odd Life of Timothy Green). Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more cities is the drama Denial directed by Mick Jackson and starring Rachel Weisz, Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Spall. Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings, The Aviator, The Silence of the Lambs, The Hobbit) has composed the film’s original music. The composer’s label, Howe Records, has released a soundtrack album featuring the score. Also opening in LA and New York before expanding to additional markets within the next few weeks is the drama American Honey directed by Andrea Arnold and starring Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf and Riley Keough. The film doesn’t feature any original score. Universal Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by artists including E-40, Rae Sremmurd, Lapsley, MadeinTYO, Sam Hunt, Mazzy Star, Lady Antebellum & more. Also opening in limited release is the family drama Milton’s Secret directed by Barnet Bain and starring Donald Sutherland, Michelle Rodriguez, William Ainscough, David Sutcliffe, Mia Kirshner, Sheila McCarthy and Hays Wellford. The film’s original music is composed by Michael Brook (Brooklyn, Into the Wild, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Fighter). No word on a soundtrack album. Also opening in select cities is the comedy Flock of Dudes directed by Bob Castrone and starring Chris D’Elia, Hannah Simone, Skylar Astin, Bryan Greenberg, Brett Gelman and Eric Andre. Jonathan Zalben has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Flock of Dudes follows a 30-something year old who decides to “break up” with his best buds in order to finally grow up. The comedy is being released by Starz Digital Media and will also be available on VOD on October 7.
Also opening in select theaters is the Netflix original documentary Amanda Knox directed by Brian McGinn & Rod Blackhurst about the infamous trial, conviction and eventual acquittal of Seattle native Amanda Knox for the 2007 murder of a British exchange student in Italy. The film’s original music is composed by Saunder Jurriaans and Danny Bensi (Enemy, The Gift, Marcy Martha May Marlene, The One I Love). No word yet on a soundtrack release. The documentary is also available to stream on Netflix starting today.
Another limited release this week is the horror thriller Within directed by Phil Claydon, produced by James Wan and starring Michael Vartan, Erin Moriarty, Nadine Velazquez, Blake Jenner, Ronnie Gene Blevins and Misty Upham. Benjamin Wallfisch (Lights Out, A Cure for Wellness, The Escapist, Desert Dancer) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been released. Within centers around a widower who moves into a seemingly perfect new home with his daughter and new wife. The thriller is now playing exclusively at Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood.
