Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller Blair Witch directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, You’re Next) and starring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid and Wes Robinson. Wingard has also composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s score. Also opening wide is the biographical drama Snowden directed by Oliver Stone and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans and Nicolas Cage. The film’s original music is composed by Craig Armstrong (Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby, The Incredible Hulk, World Trade Center) and Adam Peters (Savages) has contributed additional music. Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Baby directed by Sharon Maguire and stars Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones and Emma Thompson. Craig Armstrong has composed the film’s original score. Mercury Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Ellie Goulding, Years & Years, Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen, Annie Lennox, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Dionne Warwick, as well as two tracks from Armstrong’s score. Opening in around 800 theaters is the music documentary Hillsong: Let Hope Rise directed by Michael John Warren. The movie follows the Australian-based band Hillsong United as they labor to record their next album and explores the history of the group. A soundtrack album featuring the songs by the band as featured in the movie was released last month. Opening semi-wide in around 300 theaters is the drama Mr. Church directed by Bruce Beresford and starring Eddie Murphy, Britt Robertson, Natascha McElhone, Xavier Samuel, Lucy Fry, Christian Madsen and McKenna Grace. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Isham (Crash, Once Upon a Time, A River Runs Through It, Blade, American Crime). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie tells the story of a unique friendship that develops when a little girl and her dying mother meet a talented cook. The drama premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by Cinelou Films. Visit the official movie website for more information.
Opening in limited release is the period drama Finding Altamira directed by Hugh Hudson and starring Antonio Banderas, Golshifteh Farahani, Nicholas Farrel, Henry Goodman, Pierre Niney, Clément Sibony, Allegra Allen and Rupert Everett. Mark Knopfler (The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog) and Evelyn Glennie have composed the film’s original music. EMI Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the score earlier this year when the movie opened overseas. Check out our previous article for the full album details. The drama is being released in the U.S. in theaters and on VOD by Samuel Goldwyn Films.
Also opening in limited release is the comedy drama Wild Oats directed by Andy Tennant and starring Shirley MacLaine, Jessica Lange, Demi Moore, Judd Hirsch, Matt Walsh and Billy Connolly. The film’s original music is composed by George Fenton who previously collaborated with the director on films including Ever After: A Cinderella Story, Anna and the King, Sweet Home Alabama and Hitch. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie follows a woman who receives an unexpected windfall check from a computer glitch and goes on the run from the law. The dramedy is being released by the Weinstein Company’s Radius label.
Also opening in select theaters is the drama The Vessel written and directed by Julio Quintana, executive produced by Terrence Malick and starring Martin Sheen, Lucas Quintana, Jacqueline Duprey, Aris Mejias and Hiram Delgado. Hanan Townshend (Knight of Cups, To the Wonder, The Bitter Angels) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the song Despertia by Gabriel Ruiz Galindo & Gabriel Luna De La Fuente (feat. Mayte Martín) was released last week. Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy drama Miss Stevens co-written and directed by Julia Hart and starring Lily Rabe, Timothée Chalamet, Lili Reinhart, Anthony Quintal, Oscar Nuñez and Rob Huebel. The film’s original music is composed by Rob Simonsen (Nerve, (500) Days of Summer, The Age of Adaline, The Spectacular Now). No word on a soundtrack release. Miss Stevens follows a teacher who chaperones a group of high schoolers to a state drama competition. The dramedy premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and is being released in theaters today and on VOD on September 20 by The Orchard.
Another limited release this week is the documentary Silicon Cowboys directed by Jason Cohen about Compaq Computer, which took on IBM in an all-out tech war that shaped the world as we know it. Ian Hultquist (My Blind Brother, Animals, Full Circle, The First Monday in May) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in limited release this weekend is the thriller The Good Neighbor (previously entitled The Waiting) directed by Kasra Farahani and starring James Caan, Keir Gilchrist, Logan Miller, Edwin Hodge, Laura Innes and Mindy Sterling. The film’s original music is composed by Andrew Hewitt (Submarine, The Double, The Stanford Prison Experiment). No soundtrack album has been released. The thriller follows a pair of mischievous high school kids who create the illusion of a haunting on an unsuspecting neighbor. The movie is being released in theaters and on VOD by Vertical Entertainment.
