In addition to the nationwide expansion of Steve Jobs, four new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy adventure The Last Witch Hunter directed by Breck Eisner and starring Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Julie Engelbrecht and Michael Caine. The film’s original music is composed by Steve Jablonsky (Transformers, Ender’s Game, The Island, Desperate Housewives). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the comedy Rock the Kasbah directed by Barry Levinson and starring Bill Murray, Kate Hudson, Zooey Deschanel, Danny McBride, Scott Caan, Bruce Willis and Leem Lubany. Marcelo Zarvos (The Affair, The Good Shepherd, Enough Said, What Just Happened) has composed the film’s original score. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring two tracks from the composer’s music, as well as the songs from the film by artists including Bob Dylan, Isa Machine & LP and Harry Nilsson. Also opening nationwide is the musical comedy Jem and the Holograms directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis. Nathan Lanier who previously scored Chu’s documentary Justin Bieber’s Believe has composed the film’s original score. Republic & Schoolboy Records have released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by the film’s title group, as well as tracks by Hailee Steinfeld, Dawin, Marian Hill and Ida Marie. The fourth wide release of the week is the found footage horror sequel Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension directed by Gregory Plotkin and starring Chloe Csengery, Chris Murray, Dan Gill, Brit Shaw, Ivy George, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Jessica Brown. Just as the previous five films in the series, the sixth installment doesn’t feature any original score and no soundtrack album has been released. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension marks the final installment in the series and is the first one to be released in 3D. Opening in limited release is the drama Suffragette directed by Sarah Gavron and starring Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw and Meryl Streep. The film’s original music is composed by Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Godzilla). Also opening in limited release is the indie drama I Smile Back directed by Adam Salky and starring Sarah Silverman, Josh Charles, Thomas Sadoski and Mia Barron. Zack Ryan (Burning Bright) has composed the film’s original score. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music is in the works. I Smile Back is based on the novel of the same title by Amy Koppelman and follows an upper-middle-class wife and mother who is struggling with mental illness and addiction. The comedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is opening in select theaters by Broad Green Pictures before being released on VOD next month. Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy drama Nasty Baby co-written and directed by Sebastián Silva who also stars in the movie alongside Kristen Wiig and Tunde Adebimpe. The film’s original music is composed by Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans (The Gift, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Enemy, The One I Love) who previously scored Silva’s last feature Magic Magic. No soundtrack album has been announced. Nasty Baby follows a gay couple trying to have a baby in Brooklyn with their best friend and whose plans are disrupted by growing harassment from a neighborhood local known as “The Bishop”. The dramedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in select theaters by The Orchard before getting a VOD release next weekend. Also opening in select theaters is the western Bone Tomahawk written and directed by S. Craig Zahler and starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, Lili Simmons and Richard Jenkins. Zahler has also composed the film’s original music with Jeff Herriott. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score. Already in select theaters since this past Wednesday is the documentary Heart of a Dog written and directed by Laurie Anderson. The artist has also composed the film’s original music. Nonesuch Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the director’s music, as well as Lou Reed’s song Turning This Head Around. Another limited release this week is the animated film anthology Extraordinary Tales directed by Raul Garcia and featuring the voices of Christopher Lee, Bela Lugosi, Julian Sands, Roger Corman and Guillermo del Toro. The film’s original music is composed by Sergio de la Puente. Extraordinary Tales tells five of Edgar Allan Poe’s best-known stories, including The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar and The Masque of the Red Death. The movie is being released in the U.S. in theaters and on VOD by GKids.
