Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend;
Opening in most theaters is the action comedy Hot Pursuit directed by Anne Fletcher and starring Reese Witherspoon, Sofia Vergara and Michael Mosley. The film’s original music is composed by Christophe Beck (Frozen, Ant-Man, Edge of Tomorrow, The Hangover) who previously collaborated with Fletcher on her last feature The Guilt Trip. Also opening wide is the comedy The D Train written and directed by Andrew Mogel & Jarrad Paul and starring Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn, Kyle Bornheimer and Adria Tennor. Andrew Dost has composed the film’s original music. Opening in limited release is the zombie thriller Maggie directed by Henry Hobson and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin and Joely Richardson. The film’s original music is composed by David Wingo (Take Shelter, Mud, The Sitter, All the Real Girls, Joe, George Washington). No word on a soundtrack release. Maggie follows a father who has to save his infected daughter when a deadly zombie virus sweeps the nation. Also opening in select cities is the comedy drama 5 Flights Up directed by Richard Loncraine and starring Morgan Freeman, Diane Keaton, Cynthia Nixon, Carrie Preston, Claire van der Boom, Korey Jackson, Michael Cristofer, Diane Ciesla, Josh Pais and Maddie Corman. David Newman (Ice Age, Anastasia, Flintstones, Hoffa, Heathers) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. 5 Flights Up follows a long-married couple during an eventful weekend after they are forced to contemplate selling their beloved Brooklyn apartment. The dramedy premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival under the title Ruth & Alex and is being released theatrically and on VOD by Focus Features. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more cities within the next couple of weeks is the biographical drama Saint Laurent directed by Bertrand Bonello (House of Tolerance) and starring Gaspard Ulliel, Jeremie Renier, Louis Garrel, Lea Seydoux, Amira Casar and Aymeline Valade. Bonello has also composed the film’s original music. EurpaCorp has released a soundtrack album featuring his score, as well as the songs from the film by artists including Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Velvet Underground, The Metros, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and Patti Austin. Also opening in limited release is the action thriller Skin Trade directed by Ekachai Uekrongtham and starring Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Michael Jai White, Ron Perlman, Peter Weller and Celina Jade. Jacob Groth (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Unforgettable, Dead Man Down) has composed the film’s original music. Skin Trade follows a detective investigating a human trafficking network run by a Serbian Gangster. Another limited release this weekend in the U.S. is the Swedish comedy The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared directed by Felix Herngren and starring Robert Gustafsson, Alan Ford, Iwar Wiklander, David Wiberg, Mia Skäringer and Jens Hultén. Matti Bye has composed the film’s original music. MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last year. Also opening in select theaters is the British music drama Spike Island directed by Mat Whitecross and starring Emilia Clarke, Elliott Tittensor, Rob James-Collier, Lesley Manville, Nico Mirallegro, Adam Long, Jordan Murphy, Oliver Heald, Michael Socha and Nick Blood. The film’s original score is composed by Ilan Eshkeri (Stardust, Still Alice, 47 Ronin, Layer Cake) and Tim Wheeler. No word on a soundtrack release. Spike Island follows a wannabe rock band in Manchester who hatch a plan to hand-deliver their demo tape to their idols, The Stone Roses, at the band’s impending gig at Spike Island. Also opening in select cities is the sci-fi adventure Infini directed by Shane Abbess and starring Daniel MacPherson, Luke Hemsworth, Grace Huang, Bren Foster, Luke Ford and Dwaine Stevenson. Infini follows a search-and-rescue team who are transported through deep space to a distant mining colony to save the sole survivor of a biological outbreak. The movie is being released by Vertical Entertainment.
Another limited release this week is the drama Bravetown directed by Daniel Duran and starring Lucas Till, Josh Duhamel, Maria Bello, Laura Dern, Kherington Payne, Sharelene Taule, Tom Everett Scott and Jae Head. The film’s original music is composed by Angelo Milli (Seven Pounds). No soundtrack album has been announced. Bravetown follows a talented DJ who succumbs to the pressures of the industry and sets out to find himself on a trip to his father’s house in North Dakota. The movie is being released in select theaters and on VOD by Entertainment One.
Also opening in limited release and on VOD is the romantic comedy Playing It Cool directed by Justin Reardon and starring Chris Evans, Michelle Monaghan, Aubrey Plaza, Topher Grace Giovanni Ribisi, Luke Wilson, Ioan Gruffud, Martin Starr, Ashley Tisdale and Philip Baker Hall. Jake Monaco (Let’s Be Cops, Struck by Lightning) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as additional music by Andrew Feltenstein & John Nau.
