Two new movies are opening this weekend:
Already playing in select theaters since this past Wednesday and opening nationwide today is the sci-fi drama Interstellar directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine. The film’s original music is composed by Hans Zimmer (Inception, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Gladiator). WaterTower Music will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music in two different editions on November 18. Check out our previous news article for the full album details. Also opening wide is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ feature Big Hero 6 directed by Don Hall & Chris Williams and featuring the voices of Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, T.J. Miller, Jaime Chung, Damon Wayans, Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell, Maya Rudolph Daniel Henney and Alan Tudyk. Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Wreck-It-Ralph, X-Men: First Class) has composed the film’s original music. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Immortals by Fall Out Boy. Click here for the full album details. Opening in limited release is the biographical drama The Theory of Everything directed by James Marsh and starring Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Lesley Manville, Simon McBurney, Maxine Peake and Harry Lloyd. The film’s original music is composed by Jóhann Jóhannsson (Prisoners, Personal Effects). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening in select markets is the drama The Better Angels written and directed by A.J. Edwards, produced by Terrence Malick and starring Jason Clarke, Diane Kruger, Brit Marling, Wes Bentley and Braydon Denney. Hanan Townshend who previously scored Malick’s To the Wonder, the upcoming Knights of Cup and also contributed music to The Tree of Life has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the classical pieces from the film. Also opening in select cities is the horror thriller Jessabelle directed by Kevin Greutert and starring Sarah Snook, Mark Webber, David Andrews, Joelle Carter, Ana de la Reguera, Larisa Oleynik, Chris Ellis, Fran Bennett ands Amber Stevens. The film’s original music is composed by Anton Sanko (Rabbit Hole, Ouija, The Possession). Lionsgate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music digitally and a physical release is available from La-La Land Records. Another limited release this weekend is the thriller Open Windows directed by Nacho Vigalondo and starring Elijah Wood, Sasha Grey, Neil Maskell and Adam Quintero. Jorge Magaz has composed the film’s original music. Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this year when the film opened overseas. Also opening in limited release is the comedy A Merry Friggin’ Christmas directed by Tristram Shapeero and starring Robin Williams, Lauren Graham, Joel McHale, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ryan Lee, Candice Bergen and Pierce Gagnon. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Ben Kweller, Rufus Wainwright, The Belle Brigade, Chuck Meade, California Feetwarmers, Aaron Tipton, FM Radio & more. No word yet on a score release.
Also opening in select theaters is the romantic comedy Elsa & Fred directed by Michael Radford and starring Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Marcia Gay Harden, Chris Noth, Jared Gilman, Scott Bakula, George Segal, James Brolin, Reg Rogers and Wendell Pierce. Luis Bacalov has composed the film’s original music. The composer has previously composed an Academy Award-winning score for Radford’s The Postman: Il Postino. No soundtrack album has been announced. Elsa & Fred follows a lively retiree in New Orleans who falls in love with a widower who moves into her apartment building. The comedy is being released by Millennium Entertainment.
Also opening in the U.S. after its international rollout is the drama Mr. Pip directed by Andrew Adamson and starring Hugh Laurie, Kerry Fox, Eka Darville, Xzannjah Matsi, Florence Korokoro, Healesville Joel and Tapiwa Soropa. The film’s original music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams who previously collaborated with Adamson on several Shrek and The Chronicles of Narnia movies. No soundtrack album has been released. Mr. Pip centers on the last Englishman remaining in a tropical village in Bougainville during its civil war in the 1990s. The drama is being distributed by Freestyle Releasing.
