Luis Bacalov has passed away today at age 84 in Rome. The composer is best known for his score for the Italian drama Il Postino, for which he received the Academy Award in the Best Original Score category in 1996. He was also Oscar-nominated in 1967 for his work on Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St. Matthew. His other credits include numerous westerns such as Django, A Bullet for the General and The Grand Duel. Other notable movies he worked on include B. Monkey, The Love Letter, Robert Duvall’s Assassination Tango, Woman on Top and Polish Wedding.

Weekly Film Music Roundup (November 7, 2014)
Two new movies are opening this weekend:
Already playing in select theaters since this past Wednesday and opening nationwide today is the sci-fi drama Interstellar directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine. The film’s original music is composed by Hans Zimmer (Inception, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Gladiator). WaterTower Music will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music in two different editions on November 18. Check out our previous news article for the full album details. Also opening wide is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ feature Big Hero 6 directed by Don Hall & Chris Williams and featuring the voices of Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, T.J. Miller, Jaime Chung, Damon Wayans, Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, James Cromwell, Maya Rudolph Daniel Henney and Alan Tudyk. Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Wreck-It-Ralph, X-Men: First Class) has composed the film’s original music. ‘Hidden Moon’ Soundtrack Announced
Varese Sarabande has announced the details of the soundtrack album for the romantic drama Hidden Moon. The album features the film’s original music written by Academy Award-winning composer Luis Bacalov (Il Postino, Sea of Dreams). The soundtrack will be released on June 10, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Hidden Moon is directed by Pepe Bojórquez and stars Wes Bentley, Ana Serradilla, Johnathon Schaech and Linda Gray. The movie centers on a young man who meets a mysterious Latin American woman at his father’s funeral and follows her to Mexico, where he discovers her identity and realizes he has fallen in love with a woman who belongs to someone else.
‘Elsa & Fred’ to Feature Music by Luis Bacalov
Luis Bacalov is the composer of the upcoming romantic comedy Elsa & Fred. The film is directed by Michael Radford (1984, The Merchant of Venice) and stars Christopher Plummer, Shirley MacLaine, Marcia Gay Harden, Scott Bakula, Chris Noth, Jared Gilman, James Brolin, George Segal, Wendell Pierce, Reg Rogers and Erika Alexander. The movie is an English-language remake of the Spanish-Argentine film of the same title directed by by Marcos Carnevale and follows a lively retiree in New Orleans who falls in love with a widower who moves into her apartment building. Radford co-wrote the screenplay with Anna Pavignano based on the 2005 film and the director is also producing the project with Ed Saxon (The Silence of the Lambs, Adaptation), Ricardo Kleinbaum, Matthias Ehrenberg (Sex, Shame and Tears) and Argentinean producers Nicolas Veinberg and Jose Levy.
