Four new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Opening in most theaters is DreamWorks Animation’s latest feature Turbo is directed by David Soren and featuring the voice talent of Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, Snoop Dogg and Samuel L. Jackson. The film’s original score is composed by Henry Jackman (Wreck-It-Ralph, X-Men: First Class). Relativity Music Group has released three different soundtrack editions for the film: a regular edition featuring the songs from the film, as well as selections of Jackman’s music, a deluxe edition featuring more score and a score-only album.
Expected to top the weekend box office is the horror thriller The Conjuring directed by James Wan and starring Lili Taylor, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Haley McFarland, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver and Sterling Jerins. Joseph Bishara (Insidious, Dark Skies) has composed the film’s score. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as the film’s “family theme”composed by Mark Isham. Also opening wide is the action comedy sequel Red 2 directed by Dean Parisot and starring Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Byung Hun Lee, Brian Cox and Neal McDonough. The film’s original score is composed and conducted by Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, The Avengers). Lionsgate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Check out our previous article for the full album details. La-La Land Records will be release a physical version of the soundtrack including additional cues on July 30.
The final wide release of the week is the supernatural action adventure R.I.P.D. directed by Robert Schwentke and starring Jeff Bridges, Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker and Stephanie Szostak. The film’s original music is composed by Christophe Beck (The Hangover, The Muppets, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) who has previously collaborated with Schwentke on 2010’s original Red film. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring Beck’s score, as well as the song The Better Man performed by Jeff Bridges and co-written and produced by T Bone Burnett earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the indie comedy drama Girl Most Likely directed by Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) and starring Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon, Darren Criss and Bob Balaban. Rob Simonsen (500 Days of Summer, The Way, Way Back) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced. Girl Most Likely, which was originally entitled Imogene, follows a New York playwright who stages a fake suicide attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, only to end up being forced into the custody of her gambling-addict mother. The film premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and was acquired by Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate for domestic distribution. To learn more about the film, visit the official movie website.
Also opening in limited release is the thriller Only God Forgivesdirected by Nicolas Winding-Refn and starring Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas and Vithaya Pansringarm. The film’s original music is composed by Cliff Martinez (Traffic, The Lincoln Lawyer) who previously scored the director’s Drive. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the song You Are My Dream by the Thai band PROUD. Visit our previous article for the full album details. Another limited release this weekend is the documentary Blackfish directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The movie traces a 39 year history of killer whales in captivity leading up to a 2010 incident where an experienced Sea World trainer was killed by the 12,000 lb. Jeff Beal (House of Cards, Rome, Appaloosa) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced at this point. The documentary premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in theaters by Magnolia Pictures. To learn more about the film, visit the official movie website.
Also opening in select cities is the horror thriller Evidence directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi and starring Stephen Moyer, Radha Mitchell, Torrey DeVitto and Caitlin Stasey. The film’s original music is composed by Atli Orvarsson (Vantage Point, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) who previously scored the director’s The Fourth Kind. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music will be released by Varese Sarabande Records next Tuesday, July 23. Also opening in limited release is the family drama Ways to Live Forever directed by Gustavo Ron and starring Ben Chaplin, Greta Scacchi, Emilia Fox, Robbie Kay, Alex Etel, Ella Purnell, Phyllida Law, Natalia Tena and Eloise Barnes. Cesar Bonita has composed the film’s original score. MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score in 2011 when the movie opened overseas.
