cliff-martinezLast night, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), held its annual Film & TV Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Cliff Martinez was honored with the Richard Kirk Award, which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. The composer whose film scoring credits include ten films directed by Steven Soderbergh, including Sex, Lies & VideotapesTraffic, Solaris and Contagion, as well as such movies as Drive, The Lincoln Lawyer, Arbitrage and The Company You Keep was presented the award by the night’s hosts, BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer-Ross. Several of Martinez’s friends and collaborators congratulated him via a tribute video, including Soderbergh, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Harmony Korine (Spring Breakers) and Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive and the composer’s most recent project Only God Forgives.

In addition, the composers of music featured in the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated primetime network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs were also celebrated. John Williams accepted a BMI Award for his work on Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln and Thomas Newman was presented an award for his Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning score for Skyfall. Both composers received a standing ovation. Also singled out was Mike Post who received his 50th BMI Award for Law & Order: SVU, more than any other composer in BMI history. Other composers who accepted their awards in person included Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, The Expendables 2, Hawaii 5-0), Mark Mothersbaugh (Hotel Transylvania, The Regular Show), Christopher Lennertz (Identity Thief, Think Like a Man, Revolution), Theodore Shapiro (The Campaign, Hope Springs), Mark Isham (Once Upon a Time, The Lucky One), Lyle Workman (American Reunion), Joe Kraemer (Jack Reacher), Aaron Zigman (Escape from Planet Earth, Madea’s Witness Protection), Tony Morales (Hatfields & McCoys), Rob Simonsen (Blue Bloods), Blake Neely (Arrow, Golden Boy), John Frizzell (The Following), David Buckley (The Good Wife), iZLER (Revenge, Shameless), Chad Fischer (Scandal), Nathan Barr (True Blood), Daniel Licht (Dexter) and Charlie Clouser (American Horror Story).
