Composer Carter Burwell (Carol, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Twilight, The Blind Side, Being John Malkovich, The Banshees of Inisherin, Anomalisa, In Bruges, Three Kings) is reteaming with director Joel Coen on the upcoming feature Jack of Spades. The film starring Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville takes place in the “atmospheric Scottish Highlands” and is being described as a “sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal.” Coen also co-wrote the screenplay with Eleanor Catton (Emma, The Luminaries), Ethan Coen and Conor McPherson (Artemis Fowl, Saltwater) based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel The Alien: A Story of Middle Age.

Premiering on Tuesday, November 3, is the Netflix original animated series Bass X Machina created by LeSean Thomas and starring Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Tati Gabrielle, Cree Summer, Currie Graham, Starletta DuPois, Chaske Spencer, Nick Thurston, André Sogliuzzo, Lynette Willis and Anoli Scott. The show’s original score is composed by Roman GianArthur (Antebellum, Stamped from the Beginning) who also co-wrote the theme song Honor Killing (performed by Monáe) with Nate Wonder at Wondaland. The Studio Mir production is set in lawless Steampunk West overrun by brutal outlaws, machines, and supernatural terrors and follows a father is forced to become judge, jury, and executioner, will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix.
Also premiering in the U.S. on Tuesday is the British TV series Curfew developed by Lydia Yeoman based on Jayne Cowie’s novel After Dark and starring Sarah Parish, Mitchell Robertson, Mandip Gill, Alexandra Burke, Lucy Benjamin, Larry Lamb and Bobby Brazier. Adam Price (Apartment 7A, The Crow Girl) has composed the show’s original music. Dubois Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score back in late 2024 when the 6-part thriller premiered in the UK on Paramount+. Rachel Portman (The Cider House Rules, Chocolat, Emma, The Manchurian Candidate, Never Let Me Go, The Duchess, The Vow, One Day) has provided the original score for the new Netflix original film A Dog’s Perfect Christmas. The movie is directed by Cathryn Michon (Cook Off!, Muffin Top: A Love Story) and stars Dennis Quaid, Milo Ventimiglia, Brooke Lena Johnson, Mary Steenburgen, Jennifer Tilly, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Ethan Ioomis, Cathryn Michon, Marissa Jaret Winoku, as well as Thomas Haden Church as the voice of the dog. The family drama is based on W. Bruce Cameron’s novel of the same title and tells the story of a family in crisis where a teenager, her grandfather and his trusty basset hound struggle to keep the household together at Christmas.
