Alan Bergman passed away last night at age 99 at his home in Los Angeles. Together with his late wife Marilyn, the songwriter/lyricist wrote dozens of songs for film and television and won three Academy Awards for the songs The Windmills of Your Mind from Norman Jewison’s The Thomas Crown Affair, The Way We Were from Sydney Pollack’s movie of the same title, as well as the (song) score from 1983’s Yentl. His 16 Oscar nominations also include songs from Tootsie, Sydney Pollack’s Sabrina, Yes, Giorgio, Shirley Valentine, Best Friends, The Happy Ending, The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean, Same Time, Next Year and The Promise. He also received multiple Grammy and Emmy Awards and nominations.

‘Yentl’ 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Soundtrack Album Announced
Columbia Records will release a new soundtrack album for the 1983 musical drama Yentl co-written and directed by Barbra Streisand and starring Streisand herself, Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving. The album features the Streisand-performed original songs from the movie written by Michel Legrand (The Thomas Crown Affair, Summer of ’42, Never Say Never Again The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and featuring lyrics by Alan Bergman & Marilyn Bergman, including previously unreleased demos that Streisand recorded in her living room accompanied by Legrand on piano. ‘Just Getting Started’ from ‘If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast’ to Be Released
Reel Gold Records will release the original song Just Getting Started from the HBO documentary If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast. The track is written by Academy Award winners Alan & Marilyn Bergman (Yentl, The Way We Were) and Dave Grusin (The Milagro Beanfield War, The Firm, On Golden Pond) and performed by Alan Bergman with Grusin & Band. The song will be released as a digital single on September 26, 2017 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The label will also release the song Young at Heart performed by Dick Van Dyke from the film on the same day (click here to pre-order). If You’re Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast is produced and directed by Danny Gold and follows Carl Reiner as he tracks down several nonagenarians, including Mel Brooks, Dick Van Dyke, Norman Lear and Betty White who show that the later years can be the happiest and most rewarding.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers has published a number of video clips from the organization’s ASCAP Film & Television Music Awards gala, which was held last week at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
