Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Battle: Los Angeles starring Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena and Michelle Rodriquez and directed by Jonathan Liebesman is expected to be the number one movie of the weekend at the domestic box office. The film’s music is written by Brian Tyler. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album with Tyler’s score (click here to check out our announcement of the soundtrack). Also opening today is Simon Wells’ Mars Needs Moms from Walt Disney Pictures. The film marks John Powell’s first out of four scores for animated movies to be released this year. Sony Masterworks has announced a soundtrack album for the upcoming drama Water for Elephants. The album includes James Newton Howard’s original score from the movie. The soundtrack will be released on April 19, 2011. To order the CD, visit Amazon. Also check out audio clips from the album below. In Water for Elephants, a veterinary student abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet. The movie’s cast is lead by Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz and Hal Holbrook. Director D.J. Caruso announced on Twitter that a release of Trevor Rabin’s music for the teen sci-fi movie I Am Number Four is in the works. After some digging, we found out that the soundtrack release will most likely be tied to the DVD/Blu-Ray release this summer and one of the major soundtrack labels will be releasing the album. Details will be posted once an official announcement is made. I Am Number Four starring Alex Pettyfer, Dianne Agron, Timothy Olyphant and Teresa Palmer and produced by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg is currently playing in theaters. Film Music Reporter has finally been able to confirm that Tyler Bates has been assigned to score the upcoming remake of Conan the Barbarian. Conan the Barbarian is directed by Marcus Nispel who previously worked with composers Steve Jablonsky (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) and Jonathan Elias (Pathfinder). The movie centering on the mythical hero driven to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village stars Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rachel Nichols, Rose McGowan and Stephen Lang. The Millennium/Nu Image film is scheduled to be released on August 19, 2011 by Lionsgate.

03/11/2011 UPDATE: We initially reported that Tim Williams will be co-composing the score according to the resume at the composer’s official webpage. The composer’s website is now listing him as just doing orchestrations, so we’re assuming that Bates will be the only credited composer. Williams has been orchestrating and conducting Bates’ recent scores and also co-wrote the score for the recent animated TV show Sym-Bionic Titan with Bates. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Super’ Soundtrack Details

Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack album for the upcoming action comedy Super directed by James Gunn and starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. The album features the original score by Tyler Bates, as well as songs by such artists as Tsar, Eric Carmen, Lo-def Dollz, Cheap Trick and Moneybrother. Intrada Records has announced a sountrack album for the 1998 comedy spoof movie Wrongfully Accused. According to Christopher Lennertz’ official website, the composer has begun working on the upcoming dark comedy Horrible Bosses. The movie stars Jason Sudekis, Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Aniston. The comedy centers on three best friends who, frustrated by their jobs, come to the conclusion the only solution is to kill one another’s bosses. The film is directed by Seth Gordon (The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters), who previously worked with composer Alex Wurman on his studio feature directing debut Four Christmases starring Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack album for the French drama Les Yeux De Sa Mère (His Mother’s Eyes). The film’s music is written by two time Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla. The soundtrack will be released on March 22, 2011. While a physical CD will be made available in Europe, the album will only be released digitally in the US. His Mother’s Eyes is directed by Thierry Kilfa and stars Catherine Deneuve.
