Marcelo Zarvos has signed on to score the upcoming drama Wonder. The film is directed by Steven Chbosky (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and stars Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Noah Jupe, Bryce Gheisar, Izabela Vidovic, Danielle Rose Russell, Millie Davis, Elle McKinnon, Daveed Diggs and Mandy Patinkin. The movie is based on the book of the same title by R.J. Palacio and centers on a young boy born with a facial deformity who is destined to fit in at a new school, and to make everyone understand he’s just another ordinary kid. ‘Singles’ – Deluxe Edition Soundtrack to Be Released

Sony Music will release a new soundtrack album for 1992 romantic comedy Singles written and directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Bridget Fonda, Campbell Scott, Kyra Sedgwick, Sheila Kelley, Jim True, Bill Pullman and Matt Dillon. The album features the songs from the film by Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell, Alice in Chains, Citizen Dick, The Smashing Pumpkins, Mike McCready, Jimi Hendrix, Soundgarden & more. Also included are tracks from the movie’s score by Cornell and Paul Westerberg. The 2-CD set features the content of the original soundtrack album on the first disc and 18 new tracks on the second disc. Quartet Records will release a soundtrack album for the Spanish thriller The Invisible Guest (Contratiempo). The album features the film’s original music composed and conducted by Fernando Velazquez (The Impossible, The Orphanage, Mama, A Monster Calls, Crimson Peak). Also included is the original song Nadie va a venir a buscarte written by Velázquez and performed by Zahara. The Cinema Audio Society has announced the nominees for the 53rd Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing. For the past couple of years, scoring mixers have been recognized alongside production, re-recording, ADR and foley mixers. In the Motion Pictures – Live Action category, the scoring mixers honored include Peter Cobbin for Marvel’s Doctor Strange (feat. music by Michael Giacchino), Daniel Kresco for Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge (music by Rupert Gregson-Wiliams), Nicholai Baxter for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land (scored by Justin Hurwitz), Joel Iwataki for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (music by Michael Giacchino) and Bobby Fernandez for Clint Eastwood’s Sully (score by Christian Jacob & The Tierney Sutton Band). The movie centers on the relationship between an immigrant from a poor town in Mexico who has drawn on her innate kindness to build a career as a health practitioner and a cutthroat, self-satisfied billionaire who meet at a dinner party. Intrada Records has announced the world premiere release of the original score for Walt Disney Pictures’ 2005 superhero movie Sky High directed by Mike Mitchell and starring Kelly Preston, Michael Angarano, Danielle Panabaker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Kurt Russell. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino (Up, Star Trek, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Lost). Film Music Reporter’s Top 10 Original Scores of 2016 (in alphabetical order):
Following their acclaimed work on Prisoners and Sicario, Johann Johannsson and director Denis Villeneuve collaborated for a third time on the sci-fi drama Arrival, resulting in arguably the most original score for a major studio release this year. Using processed electronics in combination with manipulated vocals and orchestra, the composer created an otherworldly sound that gives the movie a unique feel. Johansson’s score is available on Deutsche Grammophon. (Standout tracks on soundtrack album: Heptapod B, Kangaru, Arrival).
Another director/composer relationship that produced yet another memorable work is Steven Spielberg’s and John Williams‘ 28th collaboration on The BFG. The composer wrote a purely orchestral score with some of his most playful writing in years for the underrated movie and proved once again that he is still at the top of his game when it comes to orchestration and thematic writing. Fernando Velazquez has been tapped to score the upcoming psychological thriller Marrowbone. The film marks the directorial debut of writer Sergio G. Sanchez (The Orphanage, The Impossible, Palm Trees in the Snow) and stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Mia Goth, George Mackay and Charlie Heaton. The movie revolves around four children who hide from the world after their mother’s death on a farm that holds a terrible secret. Sanchez also wrote the screenplay. J.A.
