The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the short list of 70 songs that are in contention for nominations in the Original Song category for the 90th Academy Awards. During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a compilation of the song clips. Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category. The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award. A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film. Marco Beltrami has been hired to score the upcoming horror thriller A Quiet Place. The film is directed by John Krasinski who also stars in the movie alongside Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. The thriller follows a family living an isolated existence in utter silence, for fear of an unknown threat that follows and attacks at any sound. Krasinski also wrote the screenplay based on an earlier draft by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods. ‘Hostiles’ Soundtrack Details

The full details of the soundtrack album for the western Hostiles have been revealed. The album features the film’s original music composed by Max Richter (The Leftovers, Taboo, Waltz with Bashir, Miss Sloane, Disconnect). Also included is the original song How Shall a Sparrow Fly written and performed by Ryan Bingham. The soundtrack is set to be released on CD on February 9, 2018 by Deutsche Grammophon and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. A digital version is set to come out on January 5 and will be available to download here. Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans to Score ‘Kailash’ & ‘XY Chelsea’

Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurrians are composing the music for the upcoming documentary Kailash. The film is directed by Derek Doneen and tells the story of how Kailash Satyarthi built a global movement to rescue children from slavery. Davis Guggenheim (Waiting for ‘Superman’, An Inconvenient Truth, He Named Me Malala) and Sarah Anthony (The Defiant Ones) are producing the project. The television special’s music is composed by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen) based on their work on the Broadway musical of the same title. Premiering in the U.S. tomorrow, December 18, is the BBC mini-series Gunpowder created by Ronan Bennett & Daniel West and starring Kit Harington, Liv Tyler, Peter Mullan, Edward Holcroft, Shaun Dooley, Robert Emms, Derek Riddell and Mark Gatiss. Hauschka (aka Volker Bertelmann) (Lion, In Dubious Battle, The Current War) has composed the original music for the 3-parter. MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album for the Russian historical epic Viking. The album features the film’s original music composed by Dean Valentine (Tiger Raid), as well as the composer’s music written for the movie’s trailers. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. Viking is directed by Andrei Kravchuk and stars Danila Kozlovsky and Svetlana Khodchenkova. Steve London is reuniting with director Robert Budreau on the upcoming thriller Stockholm. The film is written and directed by Budreau and stars Ethan Hawke, Noomi Rapace, Mark Strong and Christopher Heyerdahl. The movie tells the true story of a 1973 bank heist and hostage crisis in Stockholm, during which the hostages bonded with their captors and turned against the authorities. Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie and Andy Serkis. The film’s original music is composed by John Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, E.T.). Also opening wide is the animated feature Ferdinand directed by Carlos Saldanha and featuring the voices of John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Anthony Anderson, Daveed Diggs, Gabriel Iglesias, Bobby Cannavale and David Tennant.
