Ramin Djawadi has signed on to score the upcoming fantasy epic The Great Wall. The film marks the English language debut of director Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers, Hero) and stars Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau, Zhang Hanyu and Eddie Peng. The movie tells the story of an elite force making a last stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. Thomas Tull (Godzilla, 300: Rise of an Empire, 42) is producing the Legendary Pictures and Atlas Entertainment production with Charles Roven (The Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, American Hustle), Jon Jashni (Crimson Peak) and Peter Loehr.
Michael Brook Scoring ‘About Ray’
Michael Brook is composing the music for the upcoming indie drama About Ray. The film is directed by Gaby Dellal (Angels Crest, On a Clear Day) and stars Naomi Watts, Elle Fanning, Susan Sarandon, Tate Donovan, Sam Trammell and Linda Emond. The movie centers on a New York teenager seeking to transition from female to male and the relationship with her single mother who is coming to terms with having to raise her only daughter as a son. Dellal has also co-written the screenplay with Nikole Beckwith (Stockholm, Pennsylvania) and is also producing the project with Marc Turtletaub & Peter Saraf (Little Miss Sunshine, Away We Go, Safety Not Guaranteed) and Dorothy Berwin.
Harald Kloser & Thomas Wander to Score ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’
Harald Kloser and Thomas Wander have been hired to score the upcoming sci-fi action adventure Independence Day: Resurgence. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich and stars Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Bill Pullman, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Judd Hirsch, Sela Ward, William Fichtner and Charlotte Gainsbourg. The sequel revolves around the nations of Earth who have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet, which comes under attack by the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Kloser is also producing the project with Emmerich and Dean Devlin (Stargate, Godzilla, The Patriot).
Disney’s ‘Moana’ to Feature Music by Mark Mancina, Opetaia Foa’I & Lin-Manuel Miranda
The full musical team for Disney’s upcoming animated feature Moana was announced at this year’s D23 fan expo. As previously announced, Mark Mancina will be composing the score for the movie. The composer who previously scored the studio’s Tarzan, Brother Bear, as well as Planes and its sequel is collaborating with Te Vaka’s Opetaia Foa’I, a New Zealand guitarist, and Lin-Manuel Miranda who is best known for writing the Broadway musical In the Heights. Moana directed by John Musker & Ron Clements (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog) is set in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania and follows a spirited teenager who takes to the seas to find the long-lost island that can connect her to her ancestors.
Michael Rohatyn Scoring Rebecca Miller’s ‘Maggie’s Plan’
Michael Rohatyn is reuniting with director Rebecca Miller on the upcoming comedy Maggie’s Plan. The film is written and directed by Miller and stars Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, Travis Fimmel, Ida Rohatyn, Wallace Shawn and Julianne Moore. The movie follows a young woman whose determination to have a child involves her in a love triangle with an unhappy academic and his eccentric critical-theorist wife. Miller is also producing the project with Rachael Horovitz (Moneyball, Grey Gardens, My Old Lady) and Damon Cardasis.
‘The Girl in the Photographs’ to Feature Music by Nima Fakhrara
Nima Fakhrara is reteaming with director Nick Simon on the upcoming horror thriller The Girl in the Photographs. The film stars Kal Penn, Claudia Lee, Kenny Wormald , Toby Hemingway, Luke Baines, Miranda Rae Mayo, Katherine Isabelle and Mitch Pileggi. The movie follows a celebrity photographer and his entourage who descend upon a sleepy community to investigate the bloody doings of a serial killer. Simon has also co-written the screenplay with Osgood Perkins (Cold Comes the Night) and Robert Morast.
Jonathan Goldsmith to Score ‘Unless’
Jonathan Goldsmith has signed on to score the upcoming indie drama Unless. The film is directed by Alan Gilsenan and stars Catherine Keener, Hannah Gross, Brendan Coyle, Matt Craven, Chloe Rose and Hanna Schygulla. The movie is based on the last book by Canadian novelist Carol Shields and centers on a writer whose oldest daughter who drops out of college and lands on a Toronto street corner panhandling and speechless. Jennifer Kawaja & Julia Sereny (Touch of Pink), Tristan Orpen Lynch (Young Ones, Jimi: All Is By My Side) and Aoife O’Sullivan are producing the project.
Emilio Kauderer Scoring Billy Ray’s ‘Secret in Their Eyes’
Emilio Kauderer is composing the music for the upcoming thriller Secret in Their Eyes. The film is directed by Billy Ray (Breach, Shattered Glass) and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Dean Norris. The movie is based on the 2009 Argentinian film of the same title, which received the Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language category, and follows an assistant district attorney who is returning to Los Angeles as a team of investigators uncovers new evidence in a 13-year-old case that may finally convict the savage killer of a child. Ray has also written the screenplay.
Rob Simonsen to Score John Wells’ ‘Burnt’
Rob Simonsen has been tapped to score the upcoming drama Burnt. The film is directed by John Wells (August: Osage County, The Company Men) and stars Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller, Omar Sy, Daniel Bruhl, Matthew Rhys, Lily James, Alicia Vikander, Sam Keeley, Uma Thurman and Emma Thompson. The movie, which was originally entitled Adam Jones, follows a chef in Paris who only ever cared about the thrill of creating explosions of taste and wants to obtain the Michelin three-star rating. Steven Knight (Eastern Promises, Locke, The Hundred-Foot Journey) has written the screenplay based on a story by Michael Kalesniko (Private Parts).
