Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the sci-fi thriller Blade Runner 2049 directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto. The film’s original music is composed by Hans Zimmer (Inception, The Dark Knight) and Benjamin Wallfisch (It, Hidden Figures). Epic and ASG Records have released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as songs by Lauren Daigle, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Also opening wide is the drama The Mountain Between Us directed by Hany Abu-Assad and starring Kate Winslet, Idris Elba, Beau Bridges and Dermot Mulroney. Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones, Westworld, Iron Man, Pacific Rim) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score today. Also opening wide this weekend is the animated feature My Little Pony: The Movie directed by Jayson Thiessen and featuring the voices of Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Liev Schreiber, Michael Peña, Sia, Taye Diggs, Uzo Aduba and Zoe Saldana. The film’s original score is composed by Daniel Ingram. RCA Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by Sia, DNCE, Lukas Graham, CL, Jessie James Decker, Rachel Platten & more. Opening in semi-wide in around 600 theaters is the family drama The Stray directed by Mitch Davis and starring Michael Cassidy, Sarah Lancaster, Connor Corum, Scott Christopher and Eliza de Azevedo Brown. Christian Davis (Christmas Eve, We Love You, Sally Carmichael!) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The drama tells the true story of how a stray dog comes out of nowhere and impacts the Davis family. Opening in limited release is the indie drama The Florida Project written and directed by Sean Baker and starring Willem Dafoe, Brooklynn Kimberly Prince, Bria Vinaite, Valeria Cotto, Christopher Rivera and Caleb Landry Jones. The film doesn’t feature an original score. Lorne Balfe (The LEGO Batman Movie, Genius) has contributed an orchestral arrangement of Kool & the Gang’s Celebration for the movie’s final scene. Also opening in limited release is the documentary Earth: One Amazing Day directed by Peter Webber & Richard Dale and narrated by Robert Redford. The film’s original music is composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, 11.22.63, Queen of Katwe, State of Play). Also opening in select theaters is the horror thriller The Crucifixion directed by Xavier Gens and starring Sophie Cookson, Corneliu Ulici, Ada Lupu and Brittany Ashworth. David Julyan (Memento, The Prestige, Insomnia, The Descent, Cabin in the Woods) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. The movie follows an American reporter who travels to investigate the possible murder of Sister Marinescu, sadistically crucified by a priest to vanquish a demon. The thriller is being released in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate.
Opening in select theaters before coming out on VOD next week is the thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99 written and directed by S. Craig Zahler and starring Vince Vaughn, Jennifer Carpenter, Udo Kier and Don Johnson. Zahler also composed the film’s original music with Jeff Herriott. Lakeshore Records will a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie performed by Butch Tavares, Adi Armour and The O’Jays next week. Opening in New York before expanding to more markets in the coming weeks is the drama Una directed by Benedict Andrews and starring Rooney Mara, Indira Varma, Tobias Menzies, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Tara Fitzgerald, Natasha Little and Poppy Corby-Tuech. The film’s original music is composed by Jed Kurzel (Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed, Alien: Covenant, The Snowtown Murders). No word on a soundtrack album. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by Vision Films.
Another limited release this week is the horror thriller Better Watch Out directed by Chris Peckover and starring Levi Miller, Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Patrick Warburton and Virginia Madsen. Brian Cachia (The Osiris Child, Infini, Undocumented) has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in select markets is the So B. It directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal and starring Alfre Woodard, Talitha Bateman, John Heard, Jacinda Barrett, Cloris Leachman, Jessica Collins, Dash Mihok and Michael Arden. The film’s original music is composed by Nick Urata (Paddington, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Ruby Sparks, Focus, I Love You, Phillip Morris). No soundtrack album has been release.
