Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the action adventure The Legend of Tarzan directed by David Yates and starring Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Djimon Hounsou, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Christoph Waltz. The film’s original music is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Over the Hedge, Bee Movie, Hotel Rwanda, Click). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as two original songs by Hozier and Zoe Mthiyane. Also opening wide is the fantasy adventure The BFG directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Penelope Wilton, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader. John Williams (Star Wars, E.T., Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws) has composed the film’s original music. The third wide release this weekend is the thriller sequel The Purge: Election Year written and directed by James DeMonaco and starring Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Edwin Hodge, Betty Gabriel, JJ Soria and Mykelti Williamson. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Whitehead (Keanu, South of Hell) who previously scored the original The Purge film and its sequel The Purge: Anarchy. Opening semi-wide in around 370 theaters is the spy thriller Our Kind of Traitor directed by Susanna White and starring Ewan McGregor, Naomie Harris, Stellan Skarsgård and Damian Lewis. Marcelo Zarvos (The Affair, The Good Shepherd, Hollywoodland, Enough Said, Ray Donovan) has composed the film’s original music. Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Opening in limited release is the documentary Life, Animated directed by Roger Ross Williams. The movie tells the story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. The film’s original music is composed by T. Griffin (The Overnighters, Return, Welcome to Leith) and Dylan Stark. No word on a soundtrack release. Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller Satanic directed by Jeffrey G. Hunt and starring Sarah Hyland, Justin Chon, Clara Mamet and Steven Krueger. Jim Dooley (Pushing Daisies, The Last Ship, Obsessed) and Todd Haberman (Hemlock Grove, The Hungover Games) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Satanic follows a college kids who are visiting old Satanic Panic-era sites in LA and follow the creepy owner of an occult store home, only to find themselves saving a suspicious girl from an apparent human sacrifice. Also opening in select cities is the comedy Buddymoon directed by Alex Simmons and starring Flula Borg, David Giuntoli, Claire Coffee, Brian T. Finney and Jeanne Syquia. The film’s original music is composed by Gabriel Feenberg. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’ score, as well as songs by Vanish Valley, Flula Borg & Dan Farber, Radical Face, Hutch Harris, Busdriver & more. Another limited release this week is the action thriller Marauders directed by Steven C. Miller and starring Christopher Meloni, Bruce Willis, Dave Bautista, Adrian Grenier, Johnathon Schaech, Lydia Hull, Tyler Jon Olson and Texas Battle. Ryan Dodson (Extraction, Submerged) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album is available. Marauders follows an FBI agent who is on the trail of bank robbers who give the stolen loot to charity. The thriller is being released in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate Premiere.
Also opening in limited release is the French/Polish drama The Innocents (Agnus Dei) directed by Anne Fontaine and starring Lou de Laâge Agata Kulesza, Agata Buzek, Vincent Macaigne, Joanna Kulig and Katarzyna Dabrowska. The film’s original music is composed by Grégoire Hetzel (Incendies, The Blue Room, The Tree). Bayard Musique has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as other music from the movie. Also opening in select U.S. theaters is the comedy Microbe and Gasoline directed by Michel Gondry and starring Ange Dargent, Théophile Baquet and Audrey Tautou. Jean-Claude Vannier has composed the film’s original music. Music Box Records has released a limited edition soundtrack featuring the composer’s score last year when the movie opened overseas. Microbe and Gasoline follows a shy, aspiring artist who meets a likeminded outcast and plan to go on an epic road trip across France. The comedy is being released stateside by Screen Media Films.
