Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the horror thriller Heretic written and directed by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods and starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East. The film’s original music is composed by Chris Bacon (Source Code, Wednesday, Bates Motel, Men in Black: International, Gnomeo & Juliet, 65, The Tick) . Also opening nationwide is the family holiday comedy dram The Best Christmas Pageant Ever directed by Dallas Jenkins, narrated by Lauren Graham and and starring Judy Greer, Pete Holmes and Molly Belle Wright. Dan Haseltine & Matthew S. Nelson (The Chosen, The Shift) have composed the film’s original score. No word on a score release. Warner Music Nashville has released Blake Shelton’s cover of Go Tell It On the Mountain from the movie last month. Opening semi-wide in a couple of hundred theaters is the action comedy Weekend in Taipei directed by George Huang and starring Luke Evans, Gwei Lun Mei, Sung Kang, Pernell Walker and Wyatt Yang. Matteo Locasciulli (Rumba Therapy, Champagne, Home Sweet Rome!, We Have a Dream, Inestimable) has composed the film’s original music. Because Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score in September when the movie opened in France. Also opening semi-wide in around 800 theaters is the Irish/Belgian historical drama Small Things Like These directed by Tim Mielants and starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Watson, Michelle Fairley, Helen Behan, Clare Dunne and Eileen Walsh. The film’s original music is composed by Senjan Jansen (Cordon, Bo, Kid). No soundtrack album has been released. The movie, which is based on the novel of the same name by Claire Keegan and follows a man working as a coal merchant to support his family who discovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent, forcing him to confront his past, premiered at this year’s Berlin Film Festival and is being distributed stateside by Lionsgate/Roadside Attraction.
Opening in select theaters today before premiering November 22 on Netflix is the drama The Piano Lesson directed by Malcolm Washington and starring Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Deadwyler, Corey Hawkins, Michael Potts, Ray Fisher and Erykah Badu. Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, The Queen, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Philomena, Godzilla) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score will be released next week. Opening in select U.S. theaters and on VOD today is the British drama The Last Rifleman directed by Terry Loane and starring Pierce Brosnan, Clémence Poésy, Jürgen Prochnow and John Amos. The film’s original music is composed by Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love, Billy Elliott, Proof, Quills, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin). No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which tells the story of a World War II veteran living in a care home in Northern Ireland who has just lost his wife and – on the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings – decides to escape his care home to travel to France to pay his final respects, premiered last year in the UK on Sky Cinema and is being distributed in the U.S. by Samuel Goldwyn Films.
Opening exclusively at Pacific Palisdades’ Bay Theater while also premiering on Netflix this week is the romantic comedy Meet Me Next Christmas directed by Rusty Cundieff and starring Christina Milian, Devale Ellis, Kofi Siriboe, Kalen Allen, Tymika Tafari, Nikki Duval and Wesley French. Dara Taylor (Strays, The Tender Bar, The Invitation, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, The Noel Diary, Echo Boomers) has composed the film’s original score. Netflix Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score this past Wednesday (click here for the full album details). Available separately as a digital single is Pentatonix’s title song (click here to listen to the track).
Also opening at the Bay Theater while also premiering on Netflix this week is the Mexican drama Pedro Páramo directed by Rodrigo Prieto and starring Manuel García-Rulfo, Tenoch Huerta, Roberto Sosa, Ilse Salas, Mayra Batalla, Héctor Kotsifakis, Noé Hernández, Dolores Heredia, Giovanna Zacarías and Yoshira Escárrega. The film’s original music is composed by Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, The Last of Us, The Motorcycle Diaries, Babel, The Book of Life).
