Michael Giacchino (Spider-Man: No Way HomeLost, Jurassic World, Star TrekRogue One: A Star Wars Story, Doctor Strange, War for the Planet of the Apes) has recently been scoring Pixar Animation Studios’ upcoming feature Lightyear. The film is directed by Angus MacLane and stars Chris Evans in the title role. The sci-fi action adventure tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear – the hero who inspired the toy – introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans. Galyn Susman (Toy Story 4) is producing the project. Giacchino has previously collaborated with MacLane on Pixar’s 2013 TV special Toy Story of Terror. He also scored the Toy Story That Time Forgot special, as well as Pixar’s features The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Cars 2, Up, Inside Out, Coco and The Incredibles 2. Lightyear will be released in theaters nationwide on June 17, 2022 by Walt Disney Pictures.

Giacchino also has recently scored Matt Reeves’ The Batman (to be released on March 4) and Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World: Dominion (to be released on June 10). The composer’s other upcoming projects include Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set to open in theaters on July 8.

Why must great composers be attached to terrible sell out projects that I would never otherwise financially support?

    • Ali says:

This is not something new… The Blockbusters always get the best composers (just look at John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer, Alan Silvestri, Danny Elfman, etc)

    • Joey says:

I personally think this movie is unlike anything Pixar has ever done, and Giacchino’s score might compliment it, as he has worked at Pixar for years. Besides, he has several big-budget live action projects coming up.

  2. Courtney says:

Micheal Giacchino is catching up to Randy Newman’s Pixar record. Can’t wait.

  3. Anthony Dazet Nevarez says:

I wish Henry Jackman or any other Dreamworks Animation/Blue Sky composer would compose the score for Lightyear.

  4. Jay says:

I like Michael Giacchino but I just think that like Lin Manuel Miranda they keep accepting projects and I feel like they lose what makes them special and what made me like them in the first place. I’m all but certain the score will sound great (probably with a memorable main theme), but I feel like it won’t be the same excitement when I see Giacchino’s name during the credits. That’s just me.

  5. Hunter Wright says:

Well, I’m surprise to see Michael Giacchino to score Lightyear. I mean, I was expecting Henry Jackman, or Hans Zimmer to score Lightyear. Speaking of which (Michael Giacchino), think of Toy Story this way. Imagine if Giacchino literally scored Toy Story 4. And Thomas Newman scoring Toy Story 3? That would’ve been cool, right?
