Ennio Morricone has passed away at age 91 today in Rome, Italy. The composer has written more than 400 scores for film and television over a six decade-spanning career. His best known film scoring credits include Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, A Fistful of Dollars and Once Upon a Time in America, Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Roman Polanski’s Frantic, Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso, Wolfgang Petersen’s In the Line of Fire and Mike Nichols’ Wolf . He received six Academy Award nominations for his scores for Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven, Roland Joffe’s The Mission, Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, Barry Levinson’s Bugsy, Giuseppe Tornatore’s Malena and won the Oscar for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. He was also honored with an Honorary Academy Award in 2007. He has also received numerous Grammy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards. Morricone is survived by his wife and their four children, including composer Andrea Morricone.
