Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Guaranteed to top the weekend box office is Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Mothersbaugh (The LEGO Movie, 21/22 Jump Street, The Royal Tenenbaums). Already playing in theaters since this past Wednesday is the comedy A Bad Moms Christmas written and directed by Jon Lucas & Scott Moore and starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Cheryl Hines, Peter Gallagher, Justin Hartley, David Walton, Christine Baranski and Susan Sarandon. Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, Baywatch, Ride Along, Agent Carter) who previously scored the original film has composed the sequel’s score. According the movie’s end credits, Sony Masterworks will release a soundtrack album for the comedy, but no announcement has been been made yet. Opening semi-wide in around 680 theaters is the biographical drama LBJ directed by Rob Reiner and starring Woody Harrelson, Michael Stahl-David, Richard Jenkins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jeffrey Donovan and Bill Pullman. The film’s original music is composed by Marc Shaiman (A Few Good Men, Misery, Sister Act, Hairspray). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Opening in limited release is the comedy Lady Bird directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Beanie Feldstein, Lucas Hedges and Timothée Chalamet. Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Magnolia, Paranorman, I Heart Huckabees). Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more markets over the next few weeks is the comedy drama Last Flag Flying co-written and directed by Richard Linklater and starring Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, Yul Vazquez and Cicely Tyson. The film’s original music is composed by Graham Reynolds (A Scanner Darkly, Bernie, Before Midnight). Amazon Content Services has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Another limited release this week is the drama My Friend Dahmer written and directed by Marc Meyers and starring. Andrew Hollander (Waitress, Sleepwalk with Me, Serious Moonlight) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. The drama, which centers on the troubled childhood of Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer who murdered 17 men and boys in the midwest United States between 1978 and 1991, premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by FilmRise. Also opening in select cities is the action movie Blade of the Immortal written and directed by and starring Takashi Miike and starring Takuya Kimura, Hana Sugisaki, Sôta Fukushi, Ebizô Ichikawa, Min Tanaka and Tsutomu Yamazaki. The film’s original music is composed by Koji Endo (13 Assassins). No word on a soundtrack album. The movie premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by Magnolia Pictures.
