Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the thriller Dunkirk directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, James D’Arcy, Jack Lowden and Barry Keoghan. The film’s original music is composed by Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, Gladiator, The Lion King). Also opening wide is the fantasy adventure Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets directed by Luc Besson and starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu and Rutger Hauer. Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) has composed the film’s original music. EuropaCorp has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs by Alexiane, Julien Rey, David Bowie, Bob Marley & The Wailers & more. Also opening nationwide is the comedy Girls Trip directed by Malcolm D. Lee and starring Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish, Larenz Tate, Kate Walsh, Mike Colter and Queen Latifah. The film’s original music is composed by David Newman (Ice Age, Anastasia, Serenity). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring a track from the composer’s score, as well as songs by Chubb Rock, Ne-Yo, Maxwell, The Soul Rebels, New Edition, GRiZ & Big Gigantic, Missy Elliott & more. Opening in limited release is the comedy drama Landline directed by Gillian Robespierre and starring Jenny Slate, Edie Falco, Abby Quinn, Jay Duplass, Finn Wittrock and John Turturro. Chris Bordeaux (Obvious Child), Jordan Cohen and Clyde Lawrence (The Rewrite) have composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. Also opening in select U.S. theaters is the French dramatic comedy The Midwife (Sage femme) . The film’s original music is composed by Gregoire Hetzel (Incendies, The Tree, My Golden Days, Daguerrotype, Summertime). Also opening in limited release is the thriller First Kill directed by Steven C. Miller and starring Hayden Christensen, Bruce Willis, Gethin Anthony, Megan Leonard, Tyler Jon Olson and Shea Buckner. Ryan Franks & Scott Nickoley (South Park, Hell and Back, Arsenal) have composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. First Kill follows a Wall Street broker who is forced to evade a police chief investigating a bank robbery as he attempts to recover the stolen money in exchange for his son’s life. The thriller is being released in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate Premiere.
Also opening in select cities is the horror thriller The Gracefield Incident written and directed by Mathieu Ratthe and starring Ratthe himself, alongside Kimberly Laferriere, Victor Andres Turgeon-Trelles, Juliette Gosselin, Alexandre Nachi and Laurence Dauphinais. The film’s original music is composed by Noah Sorota (Falling Skies, Jinn). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score was released earlier this week. Another limited release this week is the Finnish drama The Fencer directed by Klaus Härö and starring Lembit Ulfsak, Mart Avandi, Ursula Ratasepp, Ann-Lisett Rebane, Piret Kalda and Liisa Koppel. Gert Wilden Jr. has composed the film’s original music. Königskinder Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score back in 2015 when the film opened overseas.
