The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is the action adventure Kong: Skull Island directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and starring Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Opening in limited release is the French horror thriller Raw written and directed by Julia Ducournau and starring Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf and Rabah Nait Oufella. Jim Williams (Sightseers, Kill List, A Field in England) has composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in limited release is the drama The Sense of an Ending directed by Ritesh Batra and starring Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling, Harriet Walter, Michelle Dockery, Emily Mortimer, Billy Howle, Joe Alwyn and Freya Mavor. The film’s original music is composed by Max Richter (The Leftovers, Miss Sloane, Taboo, Disconnect, Waltz with Bashir) who previously scored Batra’s The Lunchbox. Also opening in select theaters is the dramatic thriller Personal Shopper written and directed by Olivier Assayas and starring Kristen Stewart and Lars Eidinger. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. The movie follows a young American woman in Paris, who makes her living as the personal shopper for a celebrity and starts to suspect she may possess psychic powers when she is receiving messages from an ambiguous source.. Also opening in select cities is the romantic drama The Ottoman Lieutenant directed by Joseph Ruben and starring Michiel Huisman, Hera Hilmar, Josh Hartnett and Ben Kingsley. Geoff Zanelli (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Disturbia, Hitman, The Pacific) has composed the film’s original score. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The movie centers on a young woman who is frustrated by ongoing injustice at home and leaves the United States, an American doctor who runs a remote medical mission within the Ottoman Empire, just before World War I. The drama is being released by Paladin.
Another limited release this week is the western Brimstone directed by Martin Koolhoven and starring Guy Pearce, Dakota Fanning, Emilia Jones, Carice Van Houten and Kit Harrington. The film’s original music is composed by Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) (Mad Max: Fury Road, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Black Mass). Also opening in limited release is the fantasy drama This Beautiful Fantastic written and directed by Simon Aboud and starring Jessica Brown Findlay, Tom Wilkinson, Andrew Scott, Anna Chancellor and Jeremy Irvine. The movie centers on the unlikely of friendship between a reclusive young woman with dreams of being a children’s book author and a cantankerous widower. The movie follows a promising students who opens his eyes to some hard truths when his fraternity’s violent hazing escalates into a disastrous hell night. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is now available to stream on Netflix.
