Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the faith-based drama God’s Not Dead 2 directed by Harold Cronk and starring Melissa Joan Hart, Jesse Metcalfe, David A.R. White, Ernie Hudson, Hayley Orrantia, Robin Givens, Fred Dalton Thompson, Maria Canals-Barrera and Sadie Robertson. The film’s original music is composed by Will Musser who previously scored the 2014 original film. Fair Trade Services has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from and inspired by the film by such artists as Newsboys, Citizen Way, John Tibbs, Audio Adrenaline, The Afters, Micah Taylor & more. Also opening wide is the comedy Meet the Blacks directed by Deon Taylor and starring Mike Epps, George Lopez, Mike Tyson, Bresha Webb, Zulay Henao, Gary Owen, Charlie Murphy, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, Paul Mooney, Andrew Bachelor, Lil Duvall, Perez Hilton, DeRay Davis and Lavell Crawford. RZA has composed the film’s original score. Penalty Entertainment and Hidden Empire Group have released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by Shaggy, Trina feat. Opening in limited released this week before expanding nationwide on April 15 is the comedy drama Everybody Wants Some!! written and directed by Richard Linklater and starring Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, Glen Powell, Wyatt Russell, Ryan Guzman, Juston Street, James Quinton Johnson, Temple Baker, Forest Vickery and Zoey Deutch. The film doesn’t feature an original score. Warner Bros. Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs featured in the film by artists including The Knack, Blondie, Van Halen, Dire Straits, The Cars, Devo, Hot Chocolate & more. Also opening in limited release is the biographical drama Miles Ahead directed by Don Cheadle who is also starring in the movie alongside Ewan McGregor, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Lakeith Lee Stanfield and Michael Stuhlbarg. The film’s original music is composed by jazz/hip-hop artist Robert Glasper. Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings have released a soundtrack album featuring tracks by the film’s subject Miles Davis, as well as new recordings overseen by Glasper, including tracks featuring Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Gary Clark, Jr., Esperanza Spalding & more. Also opening in select theaters is the New Zealand drama The Dark Horse written and directed by James Napier Roberston and starring Cliff Curtis, James Rolleston, Torrance Miriama, Miriama McDowell, Xavier Horan, Wayne Hapi and Baz Te Hira. Dana Lund has composed the film’s original music. The composer has released a soundtrack album featuring her score last month. Also opening in select cities is the comedic thriller Kill Your Friends directed by Owen Harris and starring Nicholas Hoult, James Corden, Georgia King, Craig Roberts, Tom Riley, Joseph Mawle, Edward Hogg, Ed Skrein, Moritz Bleibtreu and Rosanna Arquette. The film’s original score is composed by Junkie XL (Mad Max: Fury Road, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Deadpool, Black Mass). Parlaphone Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from and inspired by the film by such artists as Blur, Radiohead, The Chemical Brothers, Oasis, The Prodigy, Bastille, Royal Blood & more. Another limited release this week is the sci-fi adventure Pandemic directed by John Suits and starring Rachel Nichols, Alfie Allen, Pat Healy, Missi Pyle and Mekhi Phifer. Alec Puro (The Art of Getting By, The Fosters, Higher Ground) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack album. Pandemic is set in the near future, where a virus of epic proportions has overtaken the planet, and follows a doctor, who, after the fall of New York, comes to Los Angeles to lead a team to hunt for and rescue uninfected survivors. The movie is being released by XLrator Media and will also be coming out on VOD on April 5.
Also opening in limited release is the horror thriller The Girl in the Photographs directed by Nick Simon and starring Kal Penn, Claudia Lee, Kenny Wormald, Toby Hemingway, Luke Baines, Miranda Rae Mayo, Katharine Isabelle and Mitch Pileggi. The film’s original music is composed by Nima Fakhrara (The Signal, The Pyramid). No soundtrack album has been announced. The Girl in the Photographs centers on a celebrity photographer and his entourage who descend upon a sleepy community to investigate the bloody doings of a serial killer. The movie executive produced by Wes Craven premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by Vertical Entertainment.
Also opening in select theaters is the horror thriller Darling written and directed by Mickey Keating and starring Lauren Ashley Carter, Brian Morvant, Sean Young, Larry Fessenden, John Speredakos and Helen Rogers. Giona Ostinelli (Carnage Park, Pod) has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score.
