Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller The Visit written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, produced by Jason Blum and starring Kathryn Hahn, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Ed Oxenbould and Olivia DeJonge. The movie doesn’t feature an original score except for short piano track for the movie’s epilogue scene written by Paul Cantelon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, W.). Also opening wide is the thriller The Perfect Guy directed by David M. Rosenthal and starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut, Charles S. Dutton, Tess Harper, Kathryn Morris, Rutina Wesley and Holt McCallany. Atli Orvarsson (Vantage Point, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Chicago Fire) and Dave Fleming have composed the film’s original music. Madison Gate Record has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music today. Also opening wide is the faith-based drama 90 Minutes in Heaven written and directed by Michael Polish and starring Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth. The film’s original music is composed by Michael W. Smith (Joshua, The Second Chance). No word on a soundtrack album. 90 Minutes in Heaven is based on the New York Times best-selling autobiography of the same name by Don Piper and centers on his near-death experience after a horrific car crash. Opening in around 100 theaters, mostly on IMAX screens, is the adventure drama Wolf Totem directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and stars Feng Shaofeng and Dou Xiao. James Horner (Titanic, Avatar, A Beautiful Mind, Braveheart) has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening in limited release is the comedy Sleeping with Other People written and directed by Leslye Headland and starring Alison Brie, Jason Sudeikis, Amanda Peet, Adam Scott, Natasha Lyonne, Jason Mantzoukas and Andrea Savage. Andrew Feltenstein & John Nau (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Casa de mi padre) who previously scored Headland’s Bachelorette have composed the film’s original music. Another limited release this week is the drama A Brilliant Young Mind directed by Morgan Matthews and starring Asa Butterfield, Rafe Spall, Sally Hawkins, Eddie Marsan, Jo Yang and Martin McCann. The film’s original music is composed by Martin Phipps (Woman in Gold, War and Peace, Brighton Rock). A Brilliant Young Mind follows a teenage prodigy’s journey to the Mathematics Olympiad, and his quest to find a formula for love. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival under the title X+Y and is being released in the U.S. by Samuel Goldwyn Films.
Already playing in select theaters since this past Wednesday is the indie drama Time Out of Mind written and directed by Oren Moverman and starring Richard Gere, Ben Vereen, Jena Malone, Kyra Sedgwick and Jeremy Strong. The film doesn’t feature an original score and no soundtrack album has been released. Time Out of Mind follows a man who seeks refuge at Bellevue Hospital, a Manhattan intake center for homeless men, where his friendship with a fellow client helps him try to repair his relationship with his estranged daughter. Also opening in limited release is the Austrian thriller Goodnight Mommy written and directed by Severin Fiala & Veronika Franz and starring Susanne Wuest, Elias Schwarz and Lukas Schwarz. Olga Neuwirth has composed the film’s original music. Goodnight Mommy takes place in an isolated home and centers on a pair of twins whose mother returns home from the hospital. The thriller premiered at last year’s Venice and Toronto Film Festival and is being released in the U.S. by TWC-Radius.
