Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the superhero movie Fantastic Four directed by Josh Trank and starring Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell and Toby Kebbell. The film’s original music is composed by Marco Beltrami (Scream, The Wolverine, World War Z, 3:10 to Yuma) and Philip Glass (The Hours, Notes on a Scandal, Candyman). Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music digitally last week and a CD version is set to come out on August 14. Also opening wide is the thriller The Gift directed by Joel Edgerton who also stars in the film alongside Rebecca Hall and Jason Bateman. Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans (Enemy, Martha Marcy May Marlene, The One I Love, The Wolfpack) have composed the film’s original music. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score digitally today. A CD version is also available overseas. Also opening wide is the comedy drama Ricki and the Flash directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Mamie Gummer, Audra McDonald, Sebastian Stan and Rick Springfield. The film doesn’t feature any original score, but Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice have provided the original song Cold One for the movie. Republic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the track, as well as the other songs from the movie performed by the film’s fictional band Ricki and the Flash, as well as Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Henry Wolfe and the Feelies. Already in theaters since this past Wednesday is the animated feature Shaun the Sheep Movie directed by Mark Burton & Richard Starzak based on the TV series. Ilan Eshkeri (Stardust, Kick-Ass, Layer Cake, Still Alice, 47 Ronin) has composed the original music for the Aardman Animation production. Silva Screen Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Feels Like Summer performed by Tim Wheeler and other music from the film. Opening in limited release is the indie drama The Diary of a Teenage Girl written and directed by Marielle Heller and starring Bel Powley, Alexander Skarsgård, Christopher Meloni and Kristen Wiig. The film’s original music is composed by Nate Heller. Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring two tracks by Heller, as well as the songs from the movie by Nico, T. Rex, Rose Garden, Heart, The Stooges, Dwight Twilley Band, Frankie Miller & more. Also opening in select cities is the thriller Cop Car directed by Jon Watts and starring Kevin Bacon, Shea Whigham, Camryn Manheim, James Freedson-Jackson and Hays Wellford. Phil Mossman (Another Earth, I Origins, We Are What We Are) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Cop Car follows two 10-year-old boys attempting to navigate the back roads behind the wheel of a seemingly abandoned police car that they have no clue how to operate. Also opening in select theaters is the mystery thriller Dark Places directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner and starring Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nicholas Hoult, Christina Hendricks, Corey Stoll, Tye Sheridan Drea DeMatteo, Andrea Roth and Sterling Jerins. The film’s original music is composed by Gregory Tripi and BT (The Fast and the Furious, Monster, Go). Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as tracks by Belong, Jag Panzer, The Georgia Satellites and David Kristian. Another limited release this week is the animated feature Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet directed by Roger Allers and featuring the voice talent of Liam Neeson, Salma Hayek, John Krasinski, Frank Langella, Alfred Molina, John Rhys-Davies and Quvenzhané Wallis. Gabriel Yared (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley) has composed the film’s original music. Warner Bros. Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as two original songs by Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan & Glen Hansard. Also opening in limited release is the political drama The Runner written and directed by Austin Stark and starring Nicolas Cage, Sarah Paulson, Connie Nielson, Wendell Pierce, Bryan Batt and Peter Fonda. The film’s original music is composed by The Newton Brothers (Oculus, Life of Crime, Detachment, High School). No word yet on a soundtrack album. The Runner takes place in the aftermath of the BP oil spill and follows an idealistic but imperfect New Orleans politician who finds his plans of restoration unraveling as his own life becomes contaminated with corruption, scandal and deceit. The drama is being released by Alchemy both in theaters and on VOD.
