Two new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action comedy 2 Guns directed by Baltasar Kormákur and starring Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, Fred Ward, James Marsden and Edward James Olmos. The film’s original score is composed by Clinton Shorter (District 9, Contraband). Metropolis Movie Music will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music digitally next Tuesday, August 6. For the full album details, check out our soundtrack announcement.
Already in theaters since Wednesday is the hybrid live action/animated family movie The Smurfs 2 directed by Raja Gosnell and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria and Brendan Gleeson. RCA Records has released a soundtrack album featuring songs from and inspired by the film, including Britney Spears’ new single Ooh La La, as well as songs by Owl City, Nelly Furtado (feat. Ace Primo)and Right Said Fred. Check out out previous article for the full details. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to other markets in the next couple of weeks is the indie drama The Spectacular Now directed by James Ponsoldt and starring Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kyle Chandler. The film’s original score is composed by Rob Simonsen (500 Days of Summer, The Way, Way Back). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama The Canyons directed by Paul Schrader and starring Lindsay Lohan, James Deen, Nolan Gerard Funk and Amanda Brooks.Broken Social scene member Brendan Canning has composed the film’s original score, with additional music by Me&John. SQE Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as the songs Love, French, Better by Gold Zebra, Fear by A Place to Bury Strangers and Coming Down by Dum Dum Girls. Another limited release this week is the sci-fi thriller Europa Report directed by Sebastián Cordero and starring Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist, Daniel Wu, Anamaria Marinca, Christian Camargo and Karolina Wydra. Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica)has composed the film’s score. The composer has released a soundtrack album featuring the score on his own Sparks & Shadows label. Also opening in select cities is the drama Drift directed by Morgan O’Neill & Ben Nott and stars Sam Worthington, Robyn Malcolm, Myles Pollard, Xavier Samuel, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aaron Glenane, Steve Bastoni and Maurie Ogden. The film’s original score is composed by Michael Yezerski (Mental, Storm Surfers 3D). World Wide Mind Films has released a soundtrack album featuring four cues from the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by artists including The Jezabels, Dennis Coffey fest.
