Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in the US and select international territories is the sci-fi action monster movie Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman. The film’s music is composed by Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, which also features former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and singer Priscilla as soloists. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel Grown Ups 2 directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello and Nick Swardson. The film’s original score is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Over the Hedge, Click, Bee Movie) who previously scored the 2010 original film. No soundtrack album has been announced. Opening in limited release is the indie drama Fruitvale Station written and directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, Octavia Spencer, Melonie Diaz, Kevin Durand and Ariana Neal. Ludwig Göransson (Community, New Girl, 30 Minutes or Less) has composed the film’s original score. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Fruitvale Station tells the true story of Oscar Grant, a young black man detained on New Year’s Day 2009 by the Bay Area Rapid Transit police and shot in the back and killed. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film. Also opening in limited release is the drama The Hunt (Jagten) co-written and directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrom, Susse Wold, Anna Louise Hassing, Lara Ranthe and Alexandra Rapaport. The film’s original music is composed by Nikolaj Egelund. Zentropa Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Visit iTunes to download the album and to listen to audio clips. The Hunt premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival where Mads Mikkelsen won the Best Actor Award for his performance. Also opening in select cities is the action thriller Killing Season directed by Mark Steven Johnson and starring Robert De Niro, John Travolta and Milo Ventimiglia. The film’s original score is composed by Christoper Young who has previously collaborated with the director on Ghost Rider and When in Rome. No soundtrack album has been announced. Killing Season follows two veterans of the Bosnian War, one American, one Serbian, who find themselves in an unlikely friendship until vengeful motives are exposed pitting them against each other. Another limited release this week is the indie comedy Crystal Fairy written and directed by Sebastián Silva and starring Michael Cera, Gaby Hoffmann, Juan Andrés Silva, José Miguel Silva and Agustín Silva. Pedro Subercaseaux has composed the film’s score. No word on a soundtrack release. Crystal Fairy follows an American expat and three Chilean brothers who plan to set off in search of the prized San Pedro cactus and its promise of beachy hallucinations. The comedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was picked up by IFC Films/Sundance Selects for U.S. distribution. Also opening in limited release is the action comedy Pawn Shop Chronicles directed by Wayne Kramer (The Cooler) and starring Paul Walker, Elijah Wood, Brendan Fraser, Vincent D’Onofrio, Matt Dillon, Thomas Jane, Lukas Haas, Chi McBride and Norman Reedus. The film’s original score is composed by The Newton Brothers (Detachment, High School). No soundtrack album has been announced. Pawn Shop Chronicles revolves around a missing wedding ring which leads to a wild-goose chase involving meth addicts, skinheads and an Elvis impersonator. Marcelo Zarvos (The Good Shepherd, The Words, Remember Me) has composed the film’s original score. No word on a soundtrack release.
