Netflix Music has released the official soundtrack album for the streamer’s original film Rustin. The album features the movie’s original score written by Grammy Award-winning saxophonist/composer Branford Marsalis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks). Also included songs performed by Victor Ryan Robertson, Tonya Boyd-Cannon, as well as Ledisi’s The Knowing (co-written by Marsalis), which has previously been released last week. Available separately as a digital single is Lenny Kravitz’s original end credits song Road to Freedom. Rustin is directed by George C. Branford Marsalis Scoring George C. Wolfe’s ‘Rustin’
Composer/saxophonist Branford Marsalis is reuniting with director George C. Wolfe (Lackawanna Blues, Nights in Rodanthe) on the upcoming Netflix original film Rustin. The biographical drama stars Colman Domingo as activist Bayard Rustin who organized the 1963 March on Washington while being forced into the background because of his sexuality. Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, CCH Pounder, Gus Halper, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Michael Potts and Johnny Ramey are also starring in the movie, which is written by Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black (Milk, Under the Banner of Heaven) based on a story by Breece.
‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ Soundtrack Album Details
Milan Records will release a soundtrack album for the Netflix original film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The album features the movie’s original music written by Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Branford Marsalis (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Once in the Life). The soundtrack is set to be released digitally and physically on December 18, 2020 and is now available for pre-order here. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is directed by George C. Wolfe and stars Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Colman Domingo, Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, Dusan Brown and Taylour Paige. The movie based on Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play is set in 1927 as tensions rise when the trailblazing Mother of the Blues and her band gather at a Chicago recording studio.

Netflix has announced today that Branford Marsalis is set to compose the music for the upcoming drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The film is directed by George C. Wolfe (Lackawanna Blues) and stars Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo and Michael Potts. The film is based on the award-winning play by August Wilson (Fences) and centers on Ma Rainey, the “Queen of the Blues,” as she makes a record in a studio in Chicago, 1927, when tensions boil between her, her white agent and producer, and bandmates.
HBO’s ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ to Feature Music by Branford Marsalis
Branford Marsalis has recently composed the original score for the new HBO original movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The film is directed by George C. Wolfe (Nights in Rodanthe, Lackawanna Blues) and stars Oprah Winfrey, Rose Byrne, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Rocky Carroll, Courtney B. Vance, Reg E. Cathey, Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Leslie Uggams. The movie is based on the book by Rebecca Skloot and tells the story of an African-American woman who becomes an unwitting pioneer for medical breakthroughs when her cells are used to create the first immortal human cell line in the early 1950s.
