Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Revenant, Little Buddha) & Aska Matsumiya (Skate Kitchen, I’m Your Woman, Selah and the Spades, 37 Seconds) have composed the original music for the upcoming sci-fi drama After Yang. Sakamoto has contributed the film’s theme, which has been released as part of the composer’s vinyl box set 2020S earlier this year. Matsumiya has composed the score for the movie written and directed by Kogonada (Columbus) and starring Colin Farrell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Justin Min, Sarita Choudhury, Haley Lu Richardson and Clifton Jones, Jr.. The drama is based on the short story Saying Goodbye to Yang by Alexander Weinstein and tells the story of a father and daughter as they try to save the life of their robotic family member. Theresa Park (The Longest Ride, The Choice) is producing the A24 production with Cinereach’s & Andrew Goldman & Paul Mezey (Beach Rats, We the Animals) and Caroline Kaplan (Letters to Juliet, Diane), After Yang will premiere next month at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival and will be distributed in the U.S. by A24.
Sakamoto’s other recent scoring projects include Ferdinando Cito Filomarino’s Beckett (originally entitled Born to Be Murdered), which will premiere this year on Netflix. Matsumiya continues to score HBO’s Betty, which just returned for its second earlier this month and currently airs Friday nights on HBO.
