The only movie opening nationwide this week is the action thriller Miss Bala directed by Catherine Hardwicke and starring Gina Rodriguez, Ismael Cruz Córdova and Anthony Mackie. The film’s original music is composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, Roots, Touching the Void, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom). Opening in limited release this week is the survival drama Arctic co-written and directed by Joe Penna and starring Mads Mikkelsen. Joseph Trapanese (Oblivion, Straight Outta Compton, The Greatest Showman, Allegiant, Robin Hood) has composed the film’s original music. Also opening in limited release is the horror comedy Piercing co-written and directed by Nicolas Pesce and starring Christopher Abbott, Mia Wasikowska, Laia Costa, Marin Ireland, Maria Dizzia and Wendell Pierce. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Randall Poster is the project’s music supervisor. No word on a soundtrack release. The movies follows a man who says goodbye to his wife and claims to be taking off on a business trip, but instead checks into a hotel with the intent to kill an unsuspecting victim. The comedy premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD today by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Also opening in select theaters is the indie drama Then Came You directed by Peter Hutchings and starring Asa Butterfield, Maisie Williams, Nina Dobrev, Tyler Hoechlin, David Koechner, Peyton List, Sonya Walger, Margot Bingham and Ken Jeong. The film’s original music is composed by Spencer David Hutchings (Peace, Love & Misunderstanding, Why Stop Now?). No soundtrack album has been announced. The drama is being released in theaters and on VOD by Shout! Factory.
Opening in select theaters while also premiering on Netflix today is the thriller Velvet Buzzsaw written and directed by Dan Gilroy and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, John Malkovich and Billy Magnussen. Marco Beltrami (Logan, A Quiet Place, Scream, 3:10 to Yuma, The Wolverine) and Buck Sanders (The Hurt Locker, Warm Bodies) have composed the film’s original music.
