Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the sci-fi thriller Morgan directed by Luke Scott, produced by Ridley Scott and starring Kate Mara, Anya Taylor-Joy, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Giamatti. The film’s original music is composed by Max Richter (The Leftovers, Waltz with Bashir, Disconnect, Testament of Youth). No word on a soundtrack release. Morgan centers around corporate troubleshooter who is summoned to a remote research lab to determine whether or not to terminate a genetically-engineered being. Also opening wide is the drama The Light Between Oceans written and directed by Derek Cianfrance and starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz, Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson. Alexandre Desplat (The Grand Budapest Hotel, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) has composed the film’s original music. Opening in limited release is the supernatural thriller The 9th Life of Louis Drax directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Jamie Dornan, Sarah Gadon, Aaron Paul, Aiden Longworth, Oliver Platt, Molly Parker and Barbara Hershey. The film’s original music is composed by Canadian singer/songwriter Patrick Watson (It’s Not Me, I Swear!). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening in limited release is the action comedy Skiptrace directed by Renny Harlin and starring Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville, Fan Bingbing and Eve Torres. Chan Kwong Wing (Internal Affairs, The Warlords) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie follows a detective from Hong Kong who teams up with an American gambler to battle against a notorious Chinese criminal. The comedy is being released in U.S. theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate Premiere.
Also opening in select theaters is the horror comedy Yoga Hosers written and directed by Kevin Smith and starring Lily-Rose Depp & Harley Quinn Smith, Justin Long, Austin Butler, Tyler Posey, Adam Brody, Ralph Garman, Tony Hale, Natasha Lyonne and Johnny Depp. The film’s original score is composed by Christopher Drake (Tusk). Rhino Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie by Depp, Smith, Love Lola Love, The Glam Skanks, Kid Moxie, Terence Trent D’Arby and Cheerleader. Opening in New York before expanding to more cities over the next couple of weeks is the drama Max Rose written and directed by Daniel Noah and starring Jerry Lewis, Kevin Pollack, Kerry Bishé, Illeana Douglas, Claire Bloom, Mort Sahl and Dean Stockwell. Morgan Whirledge has composed the film’s original score. The movie also features an original song featuring music by Michel Legrand and lyrics by Alan & Marilyn Bergman. Max Rose follows a jazz pianist who makes a discovery after the death of his wife that causes him to believe his sixty-five year marriage was a lie. The drama is being released by Paladin.
Also opening in select cities is the action movie Kickboxer: Vengeance directed by John Stockwell and starring David Bautista, Alain Moussi, Gina Carano, Georges St-Pierre and Jean-Claude Van Damme. The film’s original music is composed by Adam Dorn (The Perfect You). No soundtrack album has been announced. Kickboxer: Vengeance follows a fighter who travels to Thailand and trains with the legendary Master Durand to avenge his brother’s death. The film is being released in theaters and on VOD by RLJ Entertainment.
