Two new movies opened nationwide this past Wednesday:
Opening in most theaters this week is the sci-fi action adventure Terminator Genisys directed by Alan Taylor and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, Matt Smith, Byung-Hun Lee and JK Simmons. The film’s original music is composed by Lorne Balfe (Home, Penguins of Madagascar). Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also now playing nationwide is the sequel Magic Mike XXL directed by Gregory Jacobs and stars Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, Gabriel Iglesias, Amber Heard, Donald Glover, Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Michael Strahan. The film doesn’t feature any original score. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album feat. the songs from the film by artists including Nick Waterhouse, Ginuwine, Backstreet Boys, Donald Glover, Matt Bomer, Glass Animals & more. Opening in limited release this weekend is the documentary Amy directed by Asif Kapadia about Amy Winehouse. The film’s original score is composed by Antonio Pinto (City of God, Lord of War, Self/Less, McFarland, USA). No soundtrack album has been announced. Amy chronicles British singer’s rise to fame with such hits likeRehab and Valerie before her untimely death at age 27 of alcohol poisoning. The documentary premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released by A24 Films. Check out our scoring assignment announcement to learn more about the movie.
Also opening in limited release is the documentary Cartel Land directed by Matthew Heineman and executive produced by Kathryn Bigelow. H. Scott Salinas (The Square, Allegiance, Murder in the First) and Jackson Greenberg have composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music earlier this week. Check out our previous news article for the full album details and to listen to audio clips. The movie, which centers on the battle between border vigilante groups and murderous Mexican drug cartels, is being released by Magnolia Pictures.
Another limited release this week is the drama Faith of Our Fathers directed by Carey Scott and starring Kevin Downes, David A.R. White, Stephen Baldwin, Candace Cameron Bure, Rebecca St. James and Si Robertson. The film’s original music is composed by Steffan and Marc Fantini (Criminal Minds, Moms’ Night Out). No word yet on a soundtrack album. Faith of Our Fathers follows two young fathers who served in the Vietnam War and, 25 years later, embark on a journey to The Wall—the Vietnam Veteran Memorial in Washington, D.C. Also opening in select theaters and on VOD is the indie drama Jackie & Ryan written and directed by Ami Canaan Mann and starring Katherine Heigl, Ben Barnes, Clea DuVall, Ryan Bingham, Cheryl Lee and Emily Alyn Lind. Nick Hans has composed the film’s original music. Universal Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film performed by Heigl & Barnes, as well as Fergus Daly, Sheila Nicholls, The Salting, Disaster Action Team and The Stay All Night Rounders. Also opening in limited release is the British drama Jimmy’s Hall directed by Ken Loach and starring Barry Ward, Simone Kirby, Jim Norton, Francis Magee, Aisling Franciosi, Andrew Scott and Brian F. O’Byrne. The film’s original music is composed by George Fenton (Dangerous Liaisons, Ever After, Anna and the King, Groundhog Day). No soundtrack album has been announced. Jimmy’s Hall follows an Irish political activist who built a dance hall for young people at a rural crossroads in Ireland in 1921. The drama premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released in the U.S. by Sony Pictures Classics. Visit the official movie website for more information.
