Volker Bertelmann was named Film Composer of the Year at the 23rd World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 50th Ghent Film Festival, for his scores for Edward Berger’s All Quiet of the Western Front (for which he also received the Academy Award earlier this year), the Norwegian World War II drama War Sailor and Saara Saarela’s sci-fi drama Memory of Water. Nicholas Britell was honored as TV Composer of the Year today for his score for the fourth and final season of the HBO original series Succession and his music for the first season of Disney+’s Star Wars series Andor. He previously won the award twice in the same category last year and in 2020 and also was honored as Film Composer of the Year in 2019, Discovery of the Year in 2017 and in the Best Original Song category in 2021. Simon Franglen was honored in the Discovery of the Year category for his score for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The Public Choice Award went to Amelia Warner for her score for Emma Holly Jones’ Mr. Malcolm’s List. Thomas Mizer & Curtis Moore won the award in the Best Original Song category for the song Your Personal Trash Man Can from the Amazon original series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. In addition, the SABAM Award for Best Young Composer went to Alec Sievern and Dirk Brossé won the award in the Best Original Score for a Belgian Production category for his music for the documentary series and film Our nature (Onze natuur). As previously announced, composers Nicola Piovani and Laurence Rosenthal were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.
