Tom Holkenborg (Mad Max: Fury Road, Deadpool, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Alita: Battle Angel) is set to return to score the action comedy sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film is directed by Jeff Fowler (who previously helmed the first two installments) and stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Lee Majdoub, Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba who will reprise their roles from the previous movies. No plot details have been announced yet, but the title character’s rival Shadow the Hedgehog is set to appear in the sequel. Neal H. Moritz (Fast & Furious, 21 Jump Street), Toby Ascher (Spenser Confidential), Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno are expected to return as producers. Holkenborg’s scores from the original 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its 2022 sequel are available from Paramount Music & La-La Land Records.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in theaters nationwide on December 20, 2024 by Paramount Pictures.

Holkenborg’s other upcoming projects include Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (to be released in theaters on March 29), Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver (to premiere on April 19 on Netflix) and George Miller’s Furiosa (to be released in theaters on May 24). He also recently composed the music for the video game Skull and Bones, which will be released on February 16 by Ubisoft.

I do appreciate his first two Sonic scores for what they are, but I do hope that, given that we’re in a post-Super Mario Bros. Movie world, we will get some more Sonic themes for this one.
