Rob Simonsen (Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Adam Project, Foxcatcher, The Way Back, (500) Days of Summer, The Age of Adeline) and Duncan Blickenstaff (Alex, Inc., Outmatched, LA to Vegas) have composed the original score for the new Disney+ original movie Hollywood Stargirl. Michael Penn (Girls, Boogie Nights, Masters of Sex) has previously been announced to compose music for the film and is credited as the project’s executive music producer and for providing additional music to the teen comedy drama co-written and directed by Julia Hart and starring Grace VanderWaal, Judy Greer, Elijah Richardson, Tyrel Jackson Williams, Nija Okoru, Al Madrigal, Judd Hirsch and Uma Thurman. In addition to producing most of the songs recorded for the film (with Nick Baxter), he also wrote the original tracks Heaven Knows (performed by VanderWaal) and Miracle Mile (performed by Z Berg). As previously announced, VanderWaal also contributed her own original song Figure It Out (co-written with and produced by Mike Elizondo). Other songs featured in the film include covers of Penn’s own track No Myth (performed by Jasmine Ash & Peter Adams), Blondie’s Dreaming (performed by Thurman & VanderWaal), Brian Wilson’s Love and Mercy and the Barry Mann- & Cynthia Weil-penned Make Your Own Kind of Music (both performed by VanderWaal). A soundtrack album will be released next Friday, June 3 by Walt Disney Records. Check back on this page for the full album details. Hollywood Stargirl will premiere on June 3 on Disney+.
Simonsen has previously scored the original 2020 Stargirl movie and also composed the music for Hart’s first two features, Miss Stevens and Fast Color. The composer’s other upcoming projects include Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, which is expected to be released this fall.
