Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL) confirmed during a recent appearance on the Film Junkee Vodka Stream that he is attached to score George Miller’s upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa. The film will star Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Miller (The Witches of Eastwick, Happy Feet, Baby: Pig in the City) is co-writing the screenplay with Nick Lathouris and is also producing the project with Doug Mitchell (Babe, Dead Calm). Holkenborg (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Alita: Battle Angel, Black Mass, Divergent) has previously scored 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road and is also collaborating with Miller on the upcoming Three Thousand Years of Longing. Furiosa is set to be released in theaters on June 23, 2023 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Holkenborg’s other recent project’s include Zack Snyder’s Justice League (to premiere on March 18 on HBO Max), Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong (to premiere on March 31 in theaters and on HBO Max) and Simon Kinberg’s The 355 (to be released in theaters on January 14, 2022 by Universal Pictures). The composer also revealed that he is involved in both the Zack Snyder-produced Army of the Dead prequel film and the anime series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas for Netflix. The prequel movie will be directed by Matthias Schweighöfer who also stars as his character “Ludwig Dieter” from the Army of the Dead feature, which Holkenborg scored last year and will premiere on Netflix on May 21. Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas chronicles the origin story of Scott (played by Dave Bautista) and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak. Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick and Ella Purnell will also reprise their roles from the feature in the anime series. Zack Snyder is directing two episodes and Jay Oliva (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) serves as the showrunner. No word yet on a premiere date yet for either project.
