Stephen Rennicks has composed the original score for the new BBC/Hulu limited series Normal People. The show is based on Sally Rooney’s New York Times best-selling novel of the same title and stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal. The drama centers on the complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in a small town in the west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College. Rooney is also executive producing the Element Pictures production with Alice Birch (Lady Macbeth), Mark O’Rowe (Boy A), Ed Guiney (The Favourite, The Lobster), Andrew Lowe (Shadow Dancer, Ripper Street), Emma Norton (Rosie), Anna Ferguson (A Discovery of Witches), as well as Lenny Abrahamson who also directed the first six episodes. Rennicks has previously collaborated with Abrahamson on the features Adam & Paul, Garage, What Richard Did, Frank, Room and The Little Stranger. Hettie McDonald (Beautiful Thing, Howard’s End) is directing the other six episodes. Normal People will premiere in the UK on April 26, 2020 on BBC Three and in the U.S. on April 29 on Hulu.
Rennicks also has the comedy drama Death of a Ladies’ Man coming up. The film is written and directed by Matt Bissonnette and stars Gabriel Byrne, Brian Gleeson, Suzanne Clément, Antoine Olivier Pilon, Karelle Tremblay and Pascale Bussières. The movie is inspired by the work of Leonard Cohen and tells the story of a womanizing poetry professor whose second or third mid-life crisis takes a turn when he returns to his family cottage in Ireland and meets the woman of his dreams. Corey Marr, Don Carmody, Marie-Claude Poulin and Martina Nilan are producing the project. Death of a Ladies’ Man is expected to premiere later this year.
