Martin Phipps is composing the music for the upcoming Netflix and BBC series Black Earth Rising. The show is written and directed by Hugo Blick and stars Michaela Cole, John Goodman, Noma Dumezweni, Harriet Walter, Tamara Tunie, Lucian Msamati and Abena Ayivor. The drama tells the story of Kate Ashby, played by Coel, who was rescued as a young child during the Rwandan genocide and adopted by Eve Ashby, a world-class British prosecutor in international criminal law. Greg Brenman (Peaky Blinders, Doctor Foster) and Piers Wenger (Doctor Who) are executive producing the project. Phipps has previously collaborated with Blick on the mini-series The Honourable Woman and The Shadow Line. Black Earth Rising is expected to premiere later this year in the UK on BBC Two and in the U.S. and other markets on Netflix.
Phipps (Woman in Gold, Victoria, Harry Brown, War & Peace) has also recently scored the period drama The Aftermath starring Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgard & Jason Clarke. The movie is set to be released on April 26, 2019 by Fox Searchlight.
