Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie and Andy Serkis. The film’s original music is composed by John Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, E.T.). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Check out our previous news article for the full album details.
Also opening wide is the animated feature Ferdinand directed by Carlos Saldanha and featuring the voices of John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Anthony Anderson, Daveed Diggs, Gabriel Iglesias, Bobby Cannavale and David Tennant. John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon, The Bourne Identity, Shrek) has composed the film’s original score. A soundtrack featuring the composer’s score has been released by Fox Music and La-La Land Records (click here for the full details). Opening in limited release is the western The Ballad of Lefty Brown written, directed, and produced by Jared Moshé and starring Bill Pullman, Peter Fonda, Joseph Lee Anderson, Jim Caviezel, Tommy Flanagan and Kathy Baker. The film’s original music is composed by H. Scott Salinas (Birth of the Dragon, City of Ghosts, Cartel Land, Murder in the First). Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original title song written and performed by Maiah Wynne. Also opening in limited release is the indie comedy Permanent written and directed by Collette Burson and starring Patricia Arquette, Rainn Wilson, Kira McLean and Nena Daniels. Craig Wedren (Role Models, School of Rock, Glow, Wanderlust, Wet Hot American Summer) and Joe Wong have composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The comedy, which follows the misadventures of an idiosyncratic family that yearns to feel more confident and artistic, is being released in theaters and on VOD by Magnolia Pictures. Also opening in select theaters is the sci-fi action adventure Beyond Skyline written and directed by Liam O’Donnell and starring Frank Grillo, Bojana Novakovic, Jonny Weston, Yayan Ruhian and Iko Uwais. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Whitehead (The Purge series, Keanu). No soundtrack album has been announced yet. Beyond Skyline is a spin-off to 2010’s Skyline and follows a detective who embarks on a relentless pursuit to free his son from a nightmarish alien warship.
