In addition to the nationwide expansion of Gifted, the only nationwide release this week is the action sequel The Fate of the Furious directed by F. Gary Gray and starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges. Opening in around 350 theaters is the animated feature Spark: A Space Tail written and directed by Aaron Woodley and featuring the voices of Jace Norman, Jessica Biel, Susan Sarandon, Patrick Stewart and Hilary Swank. Robert Duncan (Castle, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Timeless, The Unit, Terriers) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album is in the works and will be announced soon. Spark is inspired the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West and follows a teenage monkey who leads a space expedition to save the planet from a cruel dictator. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding nationwide next week is the adventure drama The Lost City of Z written and directed by James Gray and starring Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, Tom Holland and Angus Macfadyen. The film’s original music is composed by Christopher Spelman who previously scored Gray’s The Immigrant. Filmtrax has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening in limited release is the drama Norman written and directed by Joseph Cedar and starring Richard Gere, Lior Ashkenazi, Michael Sheen, Steve Buscemi, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Dan Stevens, Hank Azaria, Harris Yulin and Josh Charles. Jun Miyake has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. The movie centers on a little man whose downfall is rooted in a human frailty all too easy to forgive: a need to matter. Missing from last week’s film music roundup was the drama Queen of the Desert, which was set to open this weekend and was moved to an earlier release on April 7 on short notice. The movie directed by Werner Herzog and starring Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson, Damien Lewis and Jay Abdo features an original score by Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Time Machine, Rescue Dawn, The Recruit).
